Have you considered a good set of Golfing gloves? They make both left and right handed leather gloves and shouldn't be too dear...
Your local Golf Course will help, as will a major sports chain or specialty golf store.

Apparently Country Roads sell a range as they are also popular with horse riders.

Why would anybody want to wear gloves when driving a car? Maybe they were useful in the old days when steering wheels were thin rimmed and difficult to get good grip.

I have to wear them in some of my cars (those with more sloping windscreens so the sun shine on my hands most of the time) as I have very light skin and being a "ranga" prone to getting skin cancers on the top of my right hand. I'm not alone and that is why the skin cancer foundation sells them.

May also be handy in summer, hot wheel after being parked up during the day. He may also have an old car with the skinny wheel. (As above) Or his mate like getting into pompous character on a Sunday drive complete with flat cap & tartan pants..... Turns out there is cancer as well!
