I've been told that the maintenance free ones should not be tampered with ie water level etc. as they are built with special regulator valves to manage the release of hydrogen gas.
Adding water may contaminate the battery. They are built differently to the ones with the 6 removable caps.

Something to be weary with maintenence free batteries being constantly on a float charge:

I'm aware the article is talking about standby diesel generators but it applies to automotive starting batteries and being constantly on float charge which is what your smart chargers do when you don't drive your car for weeks on end.

Century just changed their entire range to maintenence free, up until a month ago they were maintenenence style except for their DIN range.

Maintenence free is fine as long as you drive your car, its not good to have them sitting on charge with smart chargers for weeks on end on a float charge, if you are going to do that then use a AGM battery as they won't explode if abused they just balloon out the casings.

Even with the maintenence style batteries I was telling people don't even bother trying to 'maintain' it because 99% of the time people do it wrong anyway, we were still getting 3-5+ years out of Century maintenence style batteries without being 'maintained'.

All I know is that the level of the sulphuric acid/water occasionally needed topping up on the self-maintaining ones which also lasted a long time.I got 5 or 6 years out of them & pouring in some distilled water wasn't a problem.Also I could check the specific strength of the acid ratio with a hydrometer.
