The factory temp guage in nearly all AU's will say between the N and O. People have changed the themometre to get a more accurate reading. People want to know when their car is getting to hot sooner.

The EGAS engine goes to 94 deg C ... and sits on the far right on the O ... just on the edge of it.

I found on the diagnostic mode that it stopped at 94 deg on the left side of the O ... and slightly rose until it comes to a stop on the rightside of the O ... this is in an AU I6.

I have heard that it doesn't rise until it goes over 110 deg C .. and that's well overheating by then .... so it's either "NORM" ... or "TOO BLOODY HOT". Not really good IMHO.

I like my Territory temp gauge ... it fluctuates between a 1/4 and half while driving

Ahhh ... the XR temp gauge is of different dimension to the base model cluster I am guessing as well ... so it will sit in a different spot on the gauge.

Mine dosnet even make it to the N, well VERY rarely.. usually sits on the line on the bracket or a little above..
i took the thermostat out and drove it around and it didnt even make it to the bracket..

put it back in, and now only on hot days when ive got a car load of people and generally give it a hard time it might just touch the N..

Not the case in AUI they actually got real gauges.

Got a pic of mien sitting in traffic at running temperature.

Sorry for the poor phone camera pic ... light was weird and the bass was up too ... LOL

Oh yeah ... ignore the fuel gauge ... it's done around 200km since the last fill ... it should be a bit below F on the damn gauge. (I'm over it)

Actually, 110 is not overheating as such. It's hot, yes, but IF (can I stress IF) you have the right collant mix, the coolant actually extends the boiling point of water from 100 degress celsius to 117 (I think, may be 121, can't quite remember). So while 110 is hot, it's not actually boiling yet - nearly, but not quite.

Our AU2 sits on the AU (as per Mech's first pic). The BBQ fuel powered AU1 XR8 sits on N and has never moved, except when towing my old heavy boat up the Clyde mountain, when it would reach M and beyond!

OK ... found the AUII temp gauge does rise more than the 94 deg ... well ... on mine it did.

Under towing a hefty load the other day in 36 degree heat ... it rose up to the right side of M ... and sat there for a little bit on an steep uphill that went for ages ... I was back in 2nd gear ... and was towing ... ummmm .... a little more than what the Falcon was meant to tow.

It came back down when I was on flat ground again .... actually dropped back to the O again as soon as load was taken off the drivetrain and engine.

Just lettign people know it does actually work when needed on the I6s. Damn shame I wasn't in diagnostic mode at the time to check the digital temp readout (as I wasn't expecting it to rise on that trip).

Have found a lot of peoples seem to stop at one point .... and not move when at running temperature.

If I know I am going to tow have stuff again in hilly areas ... I put the diagnostic mode on and get readings .... will need to be a bloody hot day again as well.

I Barely scrape over the bracket line either. Is this a bad thing, like is the engine staying in cold start mode or anything?

Maybe your thermostat jammed open all the time ... new thermostat from Ford isn't expensive (and is the correct one that needs to be used) ... might be worth a shot just swapping it over.

Removed the standard 92 degree thermostat 2 months ago and replaced with an 82 degree, originally my temp guage used to sit on left hand edge of the 'O' or normal and would never move, even sitting on 120 in 3rd all the way up the Moonbies near Tamworth, never budged. Upon fitting the 82 degree thermo I have found a further increase in fuel economy (averaging 680km/60litres regular unleaded) mind you I wont say that changing the thermo has caused this (my conclusion is a better head temp for the Vapourate setup on my injectors).
Now the temp guage will sit bottom of the 'N' during normal driving and when under full load it can been seen to move up to the bottom of the 'O' again. Once returned to normal conditions it quickly moves back to the bottom of the 'N'.
Gives me a little more warning if the temp is going somewhere I dont want it especially when the running conditions are normal.
