That was a bit of a sign of the times you can still see with some old abandoned servos...they had a small hotel attached.
It used to be an awful lot further between servos back then, and roads weren't as good (as surprising as that may seem in some places...). A long trip could take a long time as people didn't generally try to drive as far in a day back then. I still remember when I was a kid in the seventies as we drove up north from Nambour to Innisfail to see family there. It would take maybe three days, staying overnight somewhere twice, and during the day you just didn't keep barrelling along, it was about the trip as much as the destination, as corny as that sounds. I still get nostalgic as we travel along Highway One and see old roadside rest areas where I remember us stopping off for sandwiches and drinks from an old esky and a cuppa, with plenty of other families stopping off for the midday meal, people talking with strangers about where they were going and where they'd been. Holy crap I sound like an old fart...but they were good times. Last edited by 2011G6E; 10-01-2014 at 07:21 PM. |

I remember as a kid stopping at a Golden Fleece restaurant every time the family drove to Ballarat from Melbourne to visit relatives. Prime dining of a cheese sandwich and milk. As kids we looked forward to it. Much better than the McDonalds option these days...

Caltex. It's a name, a star, that first appeared in Australia in the same year we ... Caltex acquired Golden Fleece in 1981 and merged with AMPOL in 1995.

Interesting that it sold recently and a DA was submitted for reuse as a service station. From memory there was a large Caltex almost next to it? Also saw a Golden Fleece sign at an old but still operating servo. It wasnt prominent more hidden by trees. Cant remember exactly which town, somewhere on the Newell.

I used to love the old time roadhouses. As a kid we used to do trips to Canberra to visit family, we lived in East Gippsland. We would go via Cann River. The roadhouse there had the best burgers going so we always stopped there on the way home. I recall it was a Mobil servo.
On the way up we ate at Bombala. Back then you did not attempt the Cann Valley Highway with a carload of kids with full stomachs!!

Thats the derelict building in South Gisborne on the old Calder fwy, just off the new freeway. Fina. A local car club has bought it and is converting it into club rooms.

My late uncle spent a lot of his working life (after the war) as a tanker driver with Golden Fleece. He actually started with them when they were the Purr Pull Petrol Company. His shed has so many Golden Fleece tins, drums, bottles and artefacts mostly in excellent condition.

Always stopped at the Golden Fleece on long trips. Pretty sure there were still some around in the late 80s, I'm sure I remember stopping when we were house hunting around 85-87.

Another possible forgotten servo branding was Esso. Back when you would buyreplacement bulbs over the counter instead of a pastry

Drive past this occasionally.
Tempted to ask how much they want for it, but suspect they get asked 10x a day.

One of the guys at work was telling me years ago they went away on a family holiday and stopped in a town for breakfast. The kids wanted to go to Maccas for breakfast, so he gave them some money, him and the boss went across the road to a roadhouse. The kids finished and came across to the roadhouse just as their breakfast was being brought out to them, the kids couldn't believe the size of the serve and it was cheaper than Maccas. Next day they all had breakfast together in a roadhouse.

There was two Golden Fleece servos in the area I grew up, Whitehorse Road Box Hill which was the Atlas Taxi Depot and and another the corner of Belmore Road and Kalonga Rds Mont Albert North. This was the local Ampol https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...9823994&type=3pol
