Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this assuming an Australian delivered Mustang can replicate the low 12 second pass as per some reports? I haven't been following, but that in itself may be a challenge.

Given the comparison (2 door pony car vs large sedan) I don't really consider the Kia in a position to be embarrassed per se. It'd be like me comparing the Huracan to the C63S, one is clearly faster but it's not an embarrassing result for the other. I acknowledge there's a price difference but that doesn't change my thinking on this.

The only embarrassing point about the Kia so far would have to be its nanny gearbox tune, which I'd be surprised if not rectified within the next 12 months.

Reportedly the 2018 mustang will do 0-100 in under 4 seconds. That's a full second ahead in a very short space of time.
When a magazine compares these two head to head and writes headlines in bold then yes it is embarrasing .

It's not me comparing the cars but they are being directly compared by the media make no mistake. These cars can be directly compared on price unlike your example.

I tend to think that they're substantially different cars regardless of the price. While the Mustang will likely be quicker across all caveman stats, let's be honest, you get a lot more car with the Stinger.

I can't really comment, I've yet to drive or even see either of them.

These cars will be compared, like it or not, its just the way the Aussie car scene has evolved.
What I do know is there's half a generation between them, brand new Kia vs 2yr old mustang and next year that will be reversed. So i think they will leapfrog each other performance wise and we'll end up with a generation of millenials arguing over stinger and mustang in the local.

So far...
Rd 1 goes to stinger
Rd 2 looks very much like a mustang win.
Rd 3???

Bring it on I say.

Yeah I know, I said the same thing when I heard lol.

3.9 is the number being touted.

Edit: that's the performance package which I believe is standard in Aus delivered cars and dragstrip mode on the 10 speed.
Typing on a tablet and don't know how to link using this.

See Post 109 in the attached link. This review is a bit long but at the 19min mark he does a 0-60mph track apps run in 4secs flat. This car was also minus the active exhaust and magna whatever-they-call-them dampers which apparently also comes with a host of GT350 suspension components.

Definitely the new 10-speed auto is a fast car. Be interesting to see what the motor-noters can get out of one.

Ouch!

I wonder if this will get the hate directed towards it like the Mustang did?

Probably not, the 7 year warranty will cover the driver if it becomes defective in the advent of a crash

Lack of autonomous braking and lane keeping assist costs it 2 stars? Seems a bit rough. Although I guess it's also in bad taste to pull safety features out of the car in an upsell ploy, it's not like the sensors are particularly expensive.

The ANCAP safety ratings have become a joke since they updated them.

Since when does autonomous braking and lane keep assist have anything to do with safety ratings.

It's on the onus of the driver to do these things ... not rely on the car to do it for you.
What is this world coming to.

Have been seeing more and more of these as well lately. Saw an R8 owner get hosed by one on the Northern Rd in Penrith the other day as well. I chortled heartily.

There are plenty of cars on the road now without autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assist that have a 5 star ANCAP.
Including the recently tested I30.

Such features are for flagship or prestige models, all ANCAP is doing is pushing up car prices on base models.

Nah.....not really
Our new Renault Megane GT has all the new safety kit.
AEB autonomous emergency braking
Lane keeping assist
Blind spot monitoring
Variable cruise control
Etc

This sort of tech is trickling down to mainstream cars now. Hyundai / Subaru / Honda / VW all have this tech.

Much of it is not expensive and can be adopted into the base and medium spec cars for small premiums.

AEB in particular is excellent and really should be standard on all cars.

Not really up on my Renaults, but a quick look puts the Megane GT at about 45K nearly 20K over the base model which doesn't have it.

which supports my post.

Sure have.

Once upon a time it was about crasworthiness of the passenger cell.
Seems to me it's now about gimmicks.

My point was that the price point for this kind of tech is coming down fast.
The Megane GT can be had for 43k on road.....
That isn’t exactly a lot of coin for a brand new car these days and it’s far from being a flagship type of car or brand.

A lot of this tech is also available on the Megane GT line which is much cheaper again.

If you look at the test reports, The actual crash data showed that the car is structurally sound.

An FG X Falcon would probably score the same today if not worse if tested today with ANCAP's new rating system.

But yes, the ANCAP rating system is a bit of a joke.
Instead of trying to rubbish car brands (who are keeping ANCAP alive - they could easily just use EURO NCAP) James (no)Goodwin should be educating consumers on the new and stupid criteria for the ANCAP ratings.

Personally i think there should be 2 ratings.
1 for crash the other for safety tech.

Agreed.

If they are going to heavily base scores on included safety tech (that improve all the time) they need to change the star system to reflect this. Always using a maximum 5 stars just adds confusion when the goal posts to achieve this score are changing constantly.
