Going from synthetic to mineral there is a noticeable drop in hp which sucks.
See how it goes in the next couple of weeks, might be dropping it and using a semi synthetic.
What is shell ultra plus called these days?
Would it be 10/40 shell helix xh7?
That's the only shell semi close to 15/40 specs.

Does your motor burn oil using 10/50 synthetic?

Well funny enough, the oil i just changed out was the HPR10 gas semi-syn , and yes it used quite a lot in 10,000k's .
Maybe 0.5 litre , enough that i had to top it up.

The two changes before that, were full syn HR10, and used maybe half of that.
I will monitor again this time around.
My engine has done 180,000 .
Maybe a thicker oil might be better ?

I've had 2 AU XR8s and they both use about 0.5L between services. 15w-40 or 10w-40 doesnt make much difference, I use the 10w-40 as it's a bit less thick on cold Canberra mornings. Magnatech and Shell HX-7 10w-40 can often be had really cheap on sale and are both good oils (ACEA A3-B4 rated which is a pretty tough spec)

I used around a litre of 10/40 repco synthetic in only 4-5000km,my motors only done 104000km so it shouldn't burn oil,it was as thin as water when I drained it and had no film strength at all.
I have shell hx7 10/40 semi in it now,the mineral oil was rubbish(only kept it in for one drive),ill see how much it burns over 5000km to compare.
From a back to back drive comparison of the two oils shell recommend the amount of hp lost using mineral oil is way too noticeable, had to try it though.
10/40 Full synthetic has the least resistance, seems to make the most hp and burns the most in my experience with my motor.
If mine only used a couple hundred ml over 5000km or even close to 500ml id be happy, mine used to blow visible smoke when pushed hard!
I might have to try another 5 oils and spend a couple hundred testing oils but once I find a good one it makes it worth it.

I use hpr15 because i was told/recommended by a number of windsor dudes on here. I listened and it has been working great for the last 3 years and 33xxxkm.

Hot summer days i get approx 20/25psi on idle, just around 35/40 cruise and 45/50psi on full stick; has been the same since ive been running it.

How many km has yours done and does it burn oil between changes?
15/60 is a fair bit thicker than what im running.
Sounds like yours has done some miles,a new motor should have 50-55 psi oil pressure,if it needs a 60 weight oil to have good oil pressure?

Stock motor, unopened, 183xxxkm, no oil burn, just a few leaks (rear main and sump gasket). Motor runs crisp as could be, ran a 14.98 with 3.9 diff gears in full weight AU LTD (approx 1900kg without me.)

My series 2 xr8 220, using Penrite mineral 15w40 Vantage, doesn't seem to burn and oil pressure has almost nil variation hot or cold .I change the oil every 5 to 7k and use Z89 ryco filter. Car has less than 60k and gets great fuel economy.
Cheers.

The factory oil gauge on a 220 is just an oil light to indicate it has pressure,it comes up to the 4th line and stays there if it has oil pressure, not a gauge as such, pretty crappy idea tbh.

I blew the sensor on mine, didn't tell me oil pressure was an issue until I was left with 1l in the sump, fitted aftermarket gauge straight away.

Its a stupid idea for sure.
I blew the oil sender on my t2 as well, just serviced it and went for a drive around the block and left a huge trail of oil back to my house, lucky I didn't go too far... oil gauge never gave me any indication I had an issue, lost about 2 litres.
I religiously replace the sender when I buy an au v8 now.

I now use Penrite HPR5 in all my AU's, Wheezers and 3/4 donks.
It's full synthetic too.

Could you clear up a couple of things for me please? Do you drain the oil & filter whilst hot and then measure it? How long do you wait when draining? Thanks in advance. HPR5 & Motorcraft filter every 5k.

Been using hx7 shell semi for a little while now, heaps better than the 10/40 repco synthetic I was burning up...the oil it was burning was also causing it to ping badly, pinging is almost completely gone now, just run a bit of octane booster in it now.

I believe every gauge in any car is the same unless its a hydraulic version which are accurate but you do have oil lines behind the dash, hence their lack of use by car companies. So, crappy they may be, but their prettier than an idiot light or audible alarm which come to think of it, the Falcons have as well.

Not bad. If there is the idiot light, and now the idiot gauge. What can we call the alarm? It needs more...

I have been using Castrol magnatec 10w 40 for the last 3 oil chnages
should I be using something better ?? the motor is quite besides the last oil change I notice
early in the morning the first 5mins when warming the XR8 up there is a very little
ticking noise after the ioil [ressue is up then it's all good goes like a windsor should... hard

FYI the XR8 has done 165.000 and it's a 220kw if that means anything

cheers Dean

Mines a 220 and im only using shell hx7 semi, its cheap to buy, started using it because mine was burning synthetic so expensive oil doesn't come into it imo,its what your motor likes.

Only ever used Penrite but I have played around with semi synths & full in different weights. I have found, like many others, that Penrite HPR5 is the most agreeable oil across the board. I have never noticed any oil loss at changes, mind you, I only use the dipstick as a gauge, but I do change oil & filter every 5000kms without fail. I know it's overkill but I like to think I am extending the life of the motor but most importantly, I enjoy spending the time working on the car and checking things over myself.

I wouldn't say overkill,i say extra insurance for a few bucks worth of oil and filter.I do mine every 5000km too.

215000ks

Oil changes every 6 months or 5000k

Used 10w50 penrite no noticeable issues in the past that I can remember

Some pinging and oil loss noticeable with redline, royal purple 10w30.

Pinging when hot with 10w40 penrite racing oil with some losses noticeable

Pressure with penrite racing 10w40

Oil pressure cold idle

48 psi

Oil temp at 90degrees+ idle

32 psi

Driving when warm around 45 psi
