This bloke got BAnned from driving just because he got into the passenger seat and let the vehikkle do the driving . As if that is not going to happen in the future , also people just ignoring whats going on "outside" even if they be in the drivers seat anyway . So a ban or fine for not paying attention , ie:unsafe operation of a motor vehikkle , stupid stuff autonomous stuff imo . And you fan boyz , whilst your entitled a opinion IE: auto cars will get better / be safer / still in development and the likes do try to be more off than more on even though i'm aware that such a thing is unlikely . Paul

The ban seems appropriate. What a DH.
What happens in the future is irrelevant, the laws reflect the technology's current limitations.

I'd go further. Permanent confiscation of vehicle and Drivers Licence noted to disallow use of any autonomous vehicle, just like if you got it on an automatic then not being allowed to drive a manual (if that still applies anywhere).
This situation is something that was always going to happen, particularly with the young idiots who steal vehicles for joy rides and deliberately goad Police in to chases. Anyone who thinks that they aren't going to test out the feature is delusional.

gez I don't know , like whats next booking me for putting my Winnebago RV on cruise control and going up back to make a coffee !
idk paul long bow to draw to say the stupidity of a driver sitting in the passengers seat not being able to take control of an autonomous now whilst they are still proving not to be 100% is the fault and collapse of the autonomous vehicle industries future

As autonomous vehicles evolve into the future law makers will have to keep pace with laws that recognise the current level of autonomy. In this case it looks like it's seen as not much more than a glorified cruise control. In the future with full autonomy the passenger car cockpit layout will evolve to a changeable lounge room layout with no steering wheel or drivers seat. Those of us that can still be bothered owning a car will have their cars running the errands and pick ups while we do something better with our time.
