My question is how relevant is ANCAP and the taxpayer funding now the OEMs are import only?
Much larger countries/regions may have similar testing? How long before the 23 members start withdrawing, rendering taxpayer funding from state and federal governments wasted ? Courtesy of caradvice.com: The Australian Federal Government will support ANCAP for five more years, announcing a $6.64 million funding plan for the independent crash-test authority. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Michael McCormack, said the decision is aimed at safeguarding the independent crash-test body's crucial work. "The work of the Australasian New Car Assessment Program is vital to improving the safety of vehicles on Australian roads, and it is crucial we provide assistance at a Federal level to help it continue," he said. Including the Australian Government, which joined in 2010, ANCAP is made up of 23 member organisations, including Australian State and Territory Governments, automotive clubs like the RACV, and the New Zealand Government. "This changing test protocol, and this funding boost, enables us to keep [the] pressure on the vehicle manufacturers. We really need to make sure Australians and New Zealanders are not missing out on any important safety features that will keep them safe on the roads," James Goodwin, ANCAP CEO, said at this morning's event in Canberra. "Safety isn't a luxury, and it shouldn't be a luxury," he later added. ANCAP last year announced it was expanding its range of crash tests, with new child and adult dummies, fresh pedestrian and cyclist targets, and new barriers among the revisions. Auto-emergency braking and lane-keeping were also added to the test roster, as semi-autonomous assists become more important parts of the buying decision. The push was part of the transition to blanket Euro NCAP standards, completed on January 1, 2018. "While safety standards have improved over the past 20 years, our support for ANCAP will keep ensuring Australians get the right information about their vehicle's safety before purchase, and independent testing of vehicles will continue to provide consumers with that information." |

ANCAP are a complete and utter joke. Inconsistent and contradictory consumer "advice" that is not communicated at all well to said consumer.
Taken from GoAuto - “The only thing stopping us having 100 per cent fleet coverage is funding and manufacturer support from some of those very high-end luxury premium vehicles like Ferraris and Lamborghinis. “But the reality is not too many people are buying those based on its safety features. People should still use the model that we use to assess a vehicle." Cough Cough......Mustang? So its ok for Ferraris and Lamborghinis to be bought for performance/looks and given the benefit of doubt but the Mustang was very publically singled out. https://www.goauto.com.au/news/gener...-16/72743.html

Ancap really only needs to review all data from ncap and nhtsb to ensure that it's compliant for Australian law. they don't need to be conducting crash tests since ancap is BASED on europe's ncap already. they are just duplicating existing work to spend money to justify their own existence.

I might appreciate ANCAP more if there actually tested for Australian conditions.
Specifically Animal strikes and rollovers. The problem with the Euro standards, is I fear that eventually they will just come down to topics such as the number of Dolphins murdered, and whether the transgender dummy felt included. |

Is ANCAP even relevant now that we have no local manufacturing?
They pretty much use the NCAP system now anyway with a few added checkpoints to justify their jobs.

Just another ****ing contest... 'our bureaucracy is better than your bureaucracy'
Seriously, if the guts of the crash test are the same, do we need an ANCAP system that just awards entire stars for the latest techno gadget? Even Hulk could do that... |

ANCAP should take an active role in safety matters such as the Takata airbag replacement, and independently test various models of their airbags in a test chamber.
In my view the public can't thrust the manufacturers / importers, and similar to what has been done in US, where a government agency has tested suspected faulty airbags to see if they send out shrapnel or are safe, ANCAP could be the most suitable in Australia to perform such testing and safety evaluations for cars already on the roads. Cheers, |

having the Government fund it, probably translates to - Let the cheap Chinese and Korean POS pass, so we can continue building on the relationship, even though they are p!ssing all over us with politics and threats to our importing.
