A quick google shows this is an old chestnut trotted out every couple years. Hasn't happened yet, and probably never will.

No government is ballsy enough to make a big change like that.

Basically this. And anyway, this latest talk is only a proposal being discussed that will be brought up in 2022 or something. Lots will happen between now and then.

But yea, I drive 170km a day, so if something like this did happen, I'd be ****ed.

I like what someone earlier in the thread said. Change the system for EV, leave the rest of us alone. It's because of EV that there discussing the changes.

I'm all in favour of user pays, but only where its practical, and not just another inefficient method to fleece the taxpayer.
Instead of inventing more, and less efficient, ways to take our money, the government should just revert to collecting tax in the most efficient manner possible.

After all, why such a fixation on the motorist, and no attention to any of the other billions of things the government wastes my taxes on?

Monday - Friday for me is 10x toll trips, because I work in Melbourne.

User pays works alright as long as I can have one registration for the multiple cars I have

Well you have heard of Pokies.

Just that you allow Crown Casino to have a monopoly on pokies because they're the only venue allowed to own them

Do you think that the govt will stop charging rego and fuel tax if they bring in road user charges? It will be an extra tax on top of the existing ones. Look at all the taxes that were supposed to be abolished when they brought in GST. They are still there.

Yes I can remember all those hidden charges were going to disappear.
Just like in NSW back when the rego stopped including the GIO third party and they promised the private CTP was going to bring down the cost of rego due to competition ! What a joke.
If its one thing I have learned over the years is...

If the government say its going to benefit us.....it will not.

I'm still waiting for my fast train service between Sydney and Melbourne too.

They may/could potentially also outsource the dept ie privatize it, thus saving taxpayers $$$ on one hand in the short term for budget deficit reasons but actually may on past experience cost the user's more by getting gouged by private owners in the long term like other user pay fiasco's..There will be beneficiary's but will it really be me & you lol..? Umm dont thnk so.

cheers, Maka
