Hi guys having this problem with my AU1 5.0 an not sure if its diff or trans is to blame....so the other day i parked on a steep hill, which was silly but I t s worked every other time on this hill ,so didn't think I'd get stuck an lose reverse power ..weeks before the diff would make a noise like the wheels jump or spin for a second or something if it had extra load on it,on level ground was fine so that's what's happened it's loaded up to reverse up the hill an something's let go an I've lost all drive in reverse all others are fine ...would it be a diff problem or a tranny problem...
An yes I've added a litre of ATF hoping it might be just low but nothing has changed

If it moves forward then it's not the diff so I'd say the transmission has most likely suffered damage to the reverse clutches.
Cheers Russ

Has your transmission got over 220,000km on it now?
Putting in the extra fluid may be too late as the damage to the clutch packs like Russell suggested maybe is already done from wear & tear plus low fluid level. To check if its stuffed, drain fluid & cut open the filter & look for clutch pack materials blocking it up. Imo get a transmission specialist to have a look at it then go from there ie: service if its still good, reco box or good 2nd hand installed, good luck. cheers, Maka

Thanks for the i info guys,I don't think I'l check it if it has 9 or 10 litres of ATF in it ,I'l get a shop to check it.. a mate said it's the clutches too but I wanted to get another opinion to be sure...there's just no engagement when you shift into reverse ..I will take it to a trans specialist an see what he says

Just with how much ATF the case holds, another member said he thought 4 or 5 litres was all it would need to fill it fro m empty...if anyone can tell me for sure is it 4 or 5 litres or 9 or 10 litres, which sounds a lot but it is a big case...just so I know how much ATF i have to buy..cheers

Hi Vortex-98, it takes around 4 litres of tq95 for a normal service but if totally drained it takes 9 litres according to my Ellery's manual, good luck!
cheers, Maka

No leaks I'm aware of, I'l have another look tomoro an not sure on km the engine has 280,000 but no idea if tranny was serviced before I got it.
What are the chances they can just change filter, fill her up with ATF an it wou l d be good.or .can they just replace what's wrong I don't have $2500 to pay for rebuild If I have to find another auto v8 trans, are auto v8 tranny the same as in the 6s

V8 trans are different unfortunately. I doubt fluid and filter will fix it. A trans place might be able to just fix what's broken but with 280,000 km it would be best to rebuild it if you plan to keep the car.

Yeah was planning on keeping it so if it needs a full rebuild ok.....I was just unsure if xr8 autos were much different to the autos the standard v8s got an if they were interchangable

Standard V8 and XR8 auto's are the same other than the ECU. If you keep your ECU then no probs (Adaptive shift in the XR8's).

XR8 is different to normal V8. The valvebody is different , same as the XR6T , there are two valves are different for clutch apply & band apply that gives added pressure, about 40psi from memory on the shifts.

Correct car is an AU
The other forum members have said the AU 4 speed autos an XR 4 speed autos are the same it's just the ecu tune is different an the automatic shift points also a little different,, would the self learning AU ecu learn there way around it or no

Gear shifts are softer/smoother in the change over standard btr 93le, i suspect what Greg said applies to my transmission too. Anymore info on this at all Greg? It looks like i may have to rebuild my original transmission, i definitely miss the way it operated. Edit, i just read Gregs post above, the mystery continues lol! Vortex-98, here's a link to a transmission for sale now out of a Au xr8 though its in Qld, maybe its worth a look - https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F332666750672 cheers, Maka

If I recall correctly (may be wrong) the AUII/III XR8 boxes (and T-series) have a difference in the valve body and apply the B2 band in 1st gear in drive. Some of the AUII XR8s clunked badly going down into first and ford had to replace the valve bodies to fix them. The normal ones only apply B2 in manual 1st and reverse. They should all work though. The solenoid shift patterns are the same. Adaptive Shift is just software.
The non-XR boxes are often cheaper. Don't overlook fairlanes, there are a few v8 ones around and I've seen the boxes out of those go dirt cheap on ebay/gumtree. |

Maka . I can't say for certain in AU ... But in BA . The CAR valve (clutch apply regulator) and BAR (Band apply regulator) valves have different size lands on the spool valves .
The valvebodies in the XR8 & XR6T are a mix of 93 LE and 97 LE . They have the added approx. +40psi on the shifts i mentioned . |

Undertow - mine originally clunked into 1st pretty harshly too on the downshift iirc, gearchanges going up were fantastic though.
Greg - i think i will get my old transmission freshened up unless there is another way to up line pressure a bit on the current box, i will ask my local transmission specialist what his opinion is. Im not sure about shift kits either yet lol. Thanks for your advice & knowledge guys, much appreciated! cheers, Maka

My AUII XR ute had the clunking into first as well from new. The BTR engineer came to Strapp Ford and we went for a drive. He said mine had the issue but was borderline in terms of repair. (Valve body exchange)
I ended up installing a PWR trans cooler in series with the radiator cooler, keeping up regular maintenance of fluid and filter changes which seemed to lessen the harsh downshifts into first. cheers Bill

This is quite a comprehensive tech info on the BTR autos, covers some disassembly, flushing, maintenance, etc.
