Interesting. The airbags didn't even go off in my BA when I crashed it.

Well my WRX only just missed the cut. One less thing to worry about

Holden is recalling 300k cars. My mum has a Cruze so I will grab the VIN but they are not on the recall site yet.

This is the reason why it is now a compulsory recall as opposed to a voluntary recall, which is what you would have been operating under:

Quote:
Previous voluntary recalls

A number of vehicle suppliers in Australia have voluntarily recalled approximately 2.7 million vehicles containing defective Takata airbags since 2009. The voluntary recalls sought to replace affected Takata airbags in recalled vehicles.

As at January 2018, the overall replacement rate for all voluntary recalls was only approximately 63 per cent of the total number of affected vehicles under voluntary recall in Australia.

Replacement rates for individual suppliers conducting voluntary recalls varied significantly, ranging from between 36 per cent to over 84 per cent. Four suppliers had replacement rates of less than 50 per cent of vehicles subject to their voluntary recalls.

Prior to the compulsory recall, however, not all vehicles with defective Takata airbags were recalled. Approximately 860,000 vehicles in Australia with defective Takata airbags were not under voluntary recall.

I am so glad this isn't Ford, because the amount of clowns who jump on the bandwagon with their stories of 'how bad these cars are' etc My wifes old man had a mint EL Fairmont & he had aftermarket LPG fitted which used to give him a bit of trouble. I pointed out the difference between a factory LPG car and a petrol car with a basic aftermarket kit fitted to which he says, ''no mate, Fords are rubbish and this would never have happened to a Holden''.

My parents used to own a VS Commodore on LPG back in the day. I don't even know how many times that thing backfired and blew the airbox to pieces... it wasn't even a particularly bad install - worst LPG car ever.

Just in case there is anyone out there who is still unsure about whether their car is effected by the recall or not, use this site:

https://ismyairbagsafe.com.au/

Very simple to use and very informative.

Checked my mums' car and it copied the VIN and then linked to the Nissan site to see what the status was.

I entered my Volvo...you haven't got a Takata airbag.

I entered my falcon...sorry we don't have your registration.

My sister was very pleased to get the recall notice telling her that her airbags could kill, but she'll have to wait to get it done.

We had our work ute done a while back. Unfortunately ever since it's got a massive rattle in the dash, sounds like Nissan didn't put things back together properly.
And there's no chance work will take it back to get looked at. It's a long drive to Townsville, and it's not the bosses who drive it.

Maybe if the recall is now compulsory the different state registration authorities should consider sending every owner a notice to suspend rego until the airbag(s) have been replaced.

Yep, that'd work real well. Thousands of people who could no longer drive their car

Not really. If the rego office gave a time frame of maybe 30 days that would be plenty of time to get the airbags changed.I got notice yesterday from Ford,so rang the local dealer who booked it in for next Friday. They could have done it Thursday, but Friday suited me better

Lets look at the real world.

Every state would have to work out who has Takata airbags and who doesn't. At a time when Gov offices are merging and/or cutting staff I can't see this happening very fast.

You then have to Hope that the registered address is the correct one, if not they get pulled over and fined for driving an unregistered uninsured car.

If that all works ok they then have to try to get a dealer to fix their car in the alloted time frame.

If they get a dealer to do it within the time frame they then have to find alternative transport whilst the dealer has their car...loan cars are few and far between, and will be worse with an airbag rush.

Romulus Merck Tries to Move Beyond Vioxx Debacle
November 12, 2007 • Merck agrees to pay nearly $5 billion to settle lawsuits from consumers contending the painkiller Vioxx caused heart attacks and strokes. The safety problems of Vioxx and the withdrawal of Vioxx from the market was a watershed event in regulating prescription drugs in the U.S.

What does this have to do with Takata airbags?

IF you check your rego number on the airbag website it comes up with the message, either the vehicle is or isn,t part of the recall. So every rego branch in the country knows which vehicle must be recalled so it wouldn,t be very hard to take measures to force owners to have the airbags replaced.

I have a simple question re airbags. The recall says that if the faulty airbag goes off people could get injured by flying pieces of metal and plastic etc.Would the same risks apply if the airbag was triggered in a crash, because the airbag still crashes through the dash and or horn bar when activated

I don't think that any have gone off when not involved in a crash. The problem is the force with which they go off ...from the article.

"Takata admitted to hiding evidence that its air bag inflators could explode with too much force, hurling shrapnel into drivers and passengers."

I had my Ranger in yesterday to change its airbags.

What was interesting, was that the service advisor, had to check if it was fitted with airbags. He told me that Ford didn't keep records of what Rangers were fitted with airbags, so they are recalling all Rangers.

I don't know about other cars but my steering Momo wheel in particular and passenger side has creases in it that are designed to fail so they basically flip up. Otherwise airbags would kill every time they go off.

The problem from what I understand is when the airbags go off in these cars is they are brittle and shoot out shards from the inflation mechanism.
