My opinion 3 cylinder engines belong in motorcycles. They might be good but longevity ?

For the economy figures then maybe there is some truth?

The less cylinders you have the more work each one does, especially in turbo boosted engines. This mean they can get hot quickly under high loads which can cause knocking. An easy way to prevent knocking is by adding more fuel to the air/fuel mixture because this lowers the temp. The downside is your efficiency will suffer.

As long as you're not thrashing these types of engines then they are fine just cruising along as it will be running at the most efficient air/fuel mixture.

Again, this is just generic and doesn't specifically mean this particular engine does this. Ford may have a very good cooling system to overcome this issue and there may be other factors.

Anyway, Ford has started hyping up the new Focus at least on Facebook. Expect to see more in the coming months.

All last 3 cars we've had from Ford recently have all been 2L diesels so can't really say anything about the Ecoboost engines but will be interesting if we ever get one.

The knock detection system starts with the sensors (microphones) that pick up engine noise and are mounted to the engine block. If the engine noise falls within the correct frequency and window of operation (around the time the spark plug fires), the ECU registers this as knock.
Based on the intensity of the knock it subtracts timing advance from the Ign.

Over here some of the track testers of the 2.3 Ecoboost Mustang were sensing something a little different while running hot laps under certain circumstances.

This led to some chassis dyno testing that revealed enrichment occurred under these conditions.

interestingly enough a tuner they brought in spent a little time and wound up getting a fairly easy 400rwhp out of the car.

So it seems the 2.3 Ecoboost uses both knock detection and feedback from heat sensors.

I would not touch one of those blown 3 cylinders with a bargepole. Perhaps the all new Dragon will be better. Perhaps. Are you feeling lucky when you buy your new car? I will be buying Japanese or Korean next time I buy a new car. Ford have lost the reputation for reliability that the old Falcons had. The powershift gearbox and the 3 cylinder Ecoboost have had big problems and Ford has not been generous to the unlucky owners.

The early ones had a defective plastic hose, not sure if Australia even got any of them
there was a Degas Hose recall for these, it was nothing to do with being a 3 cylinder engine

Had a drive of an Active. It drives very, very nicely. Returning to the brilliance of the first Focus in terms of ride/handling/steering imo. Ecoboost engine gets along well too.

Styling is a little generic and Mazda 3 like though.

I disagree, its instantly recognizable as a Focus. whereas cars like Corolla keep changing looks every model.

Are these in dealerships already, where are you guys seeing them? I've been stalking Ford dealers for the past week hoping to get a look at one until I read they supposedly delayed launch until December?

Fine I guess. Didn't pay much attention to it. It's 35mm higher than the regular Focus.
