Leaking Boot... Whats going on????

I have noticed water in my boot after it rains... I tried to trace it down but all i can see are rust marks where panels join in the upper right hand side of the boot.

Has anyone else had this problem???

Yep Au problem for sure.

Its either your rubber seals are not seated / worn, or the common problem is leaking through where the rear spoiler bolts to the boot.
I have also heard from someone that their rear windscreen was involved once.

I found water in my boot last year, looked at the rubbers on the spoiler mounting bolts - ok.

Someone (can't remember who) suggested looking at the number plate mounting screws. I had replaced dodgy ones with some better (and longer) items. Turns out that putting them in drilled through the plastic retaining lugs. I put dabs of silicone on each, had some very heavy rain here and there, boot dry!

I had a problem with the spoiler, i would half open my boot and it was dry....open it up full and water would come out the boot lid...

Just took off the spoiler and used silicone around the mounting holes......i think the main one you have to look out for is the wire hole.....make sure its pulged up good...

I dont have a spoiler, so that rules out that area...

I will try take some photos of the area tonight and post them tomorrow.

I get the same problem too.

When I lift my boot lid up 1/2 to 3/4 after it's been raining,no problem,but once I go past 3/4 up I end up getting a good trickle either down my back while I am leaning in,or onto the boot carpet- usually both!!

I am pretty sure that it actually is the water that collects in the bottom lip of the boot,by the number plate,and it get's there via the space in behind and around the number plate.If you look at the area on the flat part of your bumper after it's been raining and then been clear for a while,you can usually see some large beads/pools of water directly under the number plate area.
And it doesn't have to rain hard to get into that area either.

Or thats certainly how it is with my AU anyway.
Not sure you can stop it, short of entirely sealing the holes and cavities around the plate fixing area.

...just my 2 cents worth!

after saturdays rain in melbourne half a coffee cup had accumulated again :(

any more ideas now that i have posted up the pics?

Thanks for the heads up on this, I will check mine.
That rust is a pity, would be nice if Ford came to the party re repairs but no doubt a nil chance on that.

If the car is a 2002 model, you may get some help from Ford. Don't all Falcons come with 5 year rust protection?

What's the go with the rust guarantee......anyone?

they will fix the rust but wont fix the cause of the rust...
I been down this path..
Mine had a rear windscreen leak from a previous repair which is fixed and i got a panel shop to do it as atleast then u no FORD wont bodgy it and now i have the water trapped in the bootlid..But atleast it aint pooling in the spare wheel well as before..Wot u gonna do hey?

unfortunately for me i think it was 5yrs in feb (need to double check)

thats pretty pi$$ poor for a car that is practically brand new to have water leaking into the boot!

anyway,.... does anyone know where the leak could be coming from???

Best fix for water falling on your head from boot is to pull out rubber grommets that are in the bottom of the boot panel, that way MOST of the water will drain out rather than tip on your head

Also pull out the back one of the spare tyre area as well and it will pay to check your jack hasn't rusted up as mine did once

Seen this a million times in panel shops over the years, water gets under the boot rubber, eats out the corner seams...then... boot full of water, might not seem like a big hole but I'd lay odds that's where it's coming from... very very common with cars belonging to people living near beaches or cars used to tow boats.

if the damage isn't too severe you might get away with wire brushing the area and re-sealing with sikaflex urethane sealer/adhesive. goes without saying of course that you'd need to repaint the effected areas

I got that all weekend, damn rain :(

When the boot hits full it can finally run out the bits it collects in, straight into the boot cavity where your laptop or whatever happens to be sitting!!! Luckily the bag I keep it in is pretty waterproof.

i found the source of my leak... water was getting into the boot via the rear windscreen and car body interface.

I crawled in the boot with a torch while the neighbour used a hose to pour water , no leak until he started pouring water over that area. A bit of sikaflex and job is done.

must be an AU trait, going to pull the spoiler off the T this weekend and also look at the number plate issue... after the rain in bris over the past week i had a spare wheel well of water, could have sold tickets as a local pool it was that deep :(....

after year's of leaking water in my au 1 falcon boot and a rust repair near number plate. still leaking i accidently found where it was comming from the boot spoiler brake light bolt i did not know it had one i knew it had a rubber in bettween the light and the boot it was caused from the mother in law hoo owned it be for me lifting the boot by the spoiler.hope it helps out.

Wow, this thread [bump] is timely, since only yesterday I was busy hunting down boot leaks. I have slightly rusted seams like those in post #8 and on one side of the carpet there's a small brown stain, like it's a very slow drip. There's something more major though, I emptied out about 2 litres of water from the spare wheel area last week. The rubber liner has one split, although it's at the top and it didn't seem to be wet. Anyone know how much one of those is worth?

Also, I presume sealing the rusted joins won't really help since the water will just pool above it, making the rust worse. There's a channel on each side that continues back into the body, does it drain via the wheel well? That seems to be where the minor leak is getting through.

The jack had a fair bit of surface rust (gave it a good greasing) and the wheel rim had some slimy white crap growing on it!!!

Looked again today and realised the passenger side of my boot was also sopping wet, and the shape of the boot under the carpet tends to make the water go into the spare wheel well. :( I think there's a decent amount of water coming through those two rusted seams during heavy rain, but when it's lighter it just drips slowly and stains the carpet. So it's a more major leak than I thought.

Anyone know how to reseal these seams? The boot has only started leaking in the past 6-12 months.

My AUII XR6 had a leaking boot when I got it. Water filled in the boot itself and spilled out when you opened it. For me it was all coming in through the spoiler mounts. The dodgy guy I bought it from had taken the spoiler off and not applied any sealant. There was also a hairline crack under the spoiler running out from the brake light that got progressively bigger. So replaced the spoiler and used clear roofing silicone as mentioned here. Problem fixed for me...so far.
