Default Start inhibit switch playing up.

Hi all

Over the last couple of days I've had a couple of instances where the Mondeo hasn't started when I've turned the key. A foot on the brake and a wiggle of the shifter and it starts fine.

My question is, where is the inhibitor switch? At the selector or in the box somewhere? I'm hoping it's somewhere easy to get to and not a gearbox out effort....

My wife occasionally drives the Mondeo (under protest) so i don't want her bailed up somewhere and unable to start it. Makes it harder to get her to drive it.....

If it's a box out effort i may just bypass the switch altogether.

Cheers

Just throwing it out there if it were the inhibitor switch wouldn't it say on the display 'Put it in Park. You could test starting it in Neutral. If nothing is showing there all I can think of atm is battery cable and startermotor and relay.

It cranks but not starts or doesn't crank at all?

Just to get you warmed up

even though it's not for your Model you can still use it for reference and change to your vehicle.

Makes sense. I haven't noticed any warning or error chime, but I've been a bit surprised and just wriggled the shifter and turned the key again.

It doesn't turn over, just dash lights then nothing when you turn the key. A wiggle and it starts normally, no indication of low battery or loose connection.

I'll trawl through the other thread tomorrow, i have a 3am start in the morning so should be sleeping....

Cheers

There's a pic of the transmission range sensor on page 39 of the (Croation) pdf:

https://www.scribd.com/document/3309...T-450#download

Also shows the PARK mechanicals.

The range sensor would serve the function of start inhibit, using magnets and hall effect sensors. As far as I can make out.

Bugger that looks internal to the gearbox.....

Plan B of bypassing the switch may be in order. Transmission is due for a oil change next service so maybe that will help.

Oh well, still enjoy driving the car, soon to have completed 100K km in a bit over 2 1/2 years

It has happened a couple of times today, and I now think it may be the ignition switch.

Both times it has indicated park on the dash, the last time I didn't wiggle the selector, just turned the key off then back on and it started.

Does anyone know if the switch mechanism on the back of the key barrel a replaceable item or would it be the whole ignition barrel? I replaced one on my commodore a few years ago and it was just the switch that had to be changed.

Hoping it is something like this....

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ignition...-/142766513918

This listing is for up to 2010 though. I need to see if i can't find a parts catalog to get a part number and check with my local Ford. It will be a pain to change I'm sure.....

Finally had a chance to replace the ignition switch. Genuine Ford part was about $40 at my local dealer.

Switch itself was an easy change, unplug the wiring and then 2 clips to remove. The plastic surround on the steering column was a different story..... One screw was a 7mm hex socket. The other was a T20(?) Torx screw. I could not get it undone, ended up snapping the plastic off then gluing it back together. It's now a standard hex head bolt to lol.
