cruise ship/export cattle trade.

damn from a distance both ships look similar, one carries 4 legged animals the other two legged.

This cattle truck arrived in town today, we are having a run of them and its great for tourism and local businesses etc.

However I am intrigued with the shape of the bow(?) front end. do these things go to northern hemisphere and plow through ice or what? inform me please of a great ugly nose like that.

Shes called the Golden Princess and is Ice rated 1A Super, which means she is designed to operate in difficult ice conditions, 1A super ships are also able to sail unassisted in most ice conditions, meaning for the most part without icebreaker assistance......

I'm confused. It looks exactly like a cruise ship with all the life boats. Surely they don't have anywhere enough crew on board? Is this a converted ship?

Im just unsure why people choose to be in close proximity to other fools for days at a time. Yeah i own a boat, but thats different, when i get over anyone onboard it goes back on the trailer. Or they get dropped off. Where they get dropped off is up to me. 90 on the river is fun, i dont care if it messes your hair up. The boat goes faster then that if i choose.

Never been there myself but apparently that close proximity makes it easy to get a root or a few

I love it - I've done two cruises with that cruise liner on the Dawn Princess at the time.

2011 - 13 nights Melbourne to Melbourne around South and North islands of NZ

2014 - Melbourne to Melbourne around South Pacific Islands, New Caledonia and Vanuatu.

It's like a floating town, 2200 passengers, mostly oldies and you just go watch theatre, comedy shows, do all sorts of silly activities, there's a 'casino' with table games and pokies, 10+ restaurants, night club etc.

You just sit around floating through the ocean at 30km/h with 2000+ other people.

Cheap holiday too, was $1800 in 2011 for 13 nights which included all my food and accommodation, just had to pay for drinks and shore activities in NZ.

It's way cheaper than travelling locally, even Adelaide which is cheap as a local destination if you're staying in the city you're spending $120-$200/night on accommodation alone for 4 stars.

I live in Adelaide and it costs more for 3 nights accommodation in Victor harbour than it does a 3 night cruise with meals and entertainment included.

My first cruise was 4 nights out of Sydney to Hobart and ending in Melbourne on the Pacific Jewel, cost me more to fly back from Melbourne than the 4 night cruise, cruise was $124 for 4 nights, thats not per night, thats total.
I took my then 16yo daughter with me as she was going through a rough patch.
To stand on the front observation deck at 6am in the morning as the ship cut its way slowly up the Derwent as dawn broke was magical and to see my girl at peace was priceless.

Last Feb i did 2 in 2 weeks, cost $180 for 3 nights Sydney to Adelaide and then $140 3 nights Adelaide to Birnie and Melbourne on the Pacific Eden.
I walked into The Dome on the first night of the second cruise and the bar tender said welcome back.

You see some interesting sights, but 99% of the people are awesome and the crews are so accommodating considering the conditions they work under.
I've got wonderful memories of my 6yo Daughter tearing up the dance floor with the official cruise hostess at the Bianco party.

Some of the entertainment is amazing, the comedy and stage shows are worth the admission fee alone and when you've spent all day sipping cocktails in the sun and all evening ****ing yourself laughing at the comedians you can grab a pizza and head up to dance the night away in the night clubs, grab a coffee and cake and listen to live music in a piano bar or take a stroll around the open deck with someone special before retreating to your freshly made and turned back bed.
I've never experienced any of the horror stories you hear of, but then i dont do the long haul itineries.

Its fun for all ages and what you make of it.

Yes agree, best holiday I ever had was a 18 day circumnavigation of NZ aboard the Volendam.
Left Sydney for Melbourne, Milford Sound, navigated down through the Fiord Lands to Oban on Steward Island in the Southern Ocean, up to Dunedin, Akoroa (Christchurch just had the earthquake) Picton, Wellington, Napier, Tauranga, Auckland and the bay of Islands back to Sydney in a Force 7 gale for 3 days.

2011, I remember 18 days was around $2000 at the time with a promenade cabin view. Holland America lines lots of yanks, no bl**dy kids, no drunks.
Only agreed to go due to it having smaller passenger number of 1500 and is an ocean liner not a cruise ship.

My ol man spends 8 months of the year cruising with them and gets great repositioning voyage deals.

Funny you should mention Pacific Eden. Wife and I are doing the 3 night Sydney Adelaide comedy cruise as first time cruisers. Cost $237 each with oceanview cabin. Unfortunately the Eden will homeport out of Adelaide for a while before heading for Fremantle then Singapore and it’s new owners.

The Eden is a relatively small ship but its got its appeal in that everything is easy to find.
My Daughter paid $199 for Oceanview.

The Eden will return to SA waters, where it regularly services our demand, in December as the Vasco Da Gama under CMV Australia ownership and will service the first half of the southern cruise season, at a guess it will be replacing the much smaller CMV Astor in our waters.
The Pacific Aria , Edens sister ship, will take on P&O's southern runs in the second half of next season in conjunction with the ships they've aquired to replace the older stuff.

My wife went a cruise some time ago and absolutely loved it.
I can't think of anything worse, personally, but she wants to a cruise with me.

Guess what - when we can afford it, we are going on a cruise - unless of course I can talk her out of it before we can afford it. (Which won't be for some time, so I have plenty of opportunity. ;D )

I saw the cruise on cruise sale finder and checked the p and o website and saw it at$199. As it was late I figured I’d jump on the next morning and book it but p and o had sold out, hence why I paid $237. Managed $150 flights with qantas back to Sydney so will get to wait it out in the qantas club.

Yes it can be quite volatile like that, mind you, an extra $12.60 per night isnt a deal breaker in any case.
When i saw the first cruise that i went on at $124 for 4 nights at first i thought no way, thats got to be per night.
Then when i booked it and the total came to $248 for a twin share i thought it was a scam, so i rang Oz Cruising to make sure and they confirmed the booking, so i frantically booked another for the inlaws.
Those few minutes it took to book a second room at that price seemed to take forever as i waited to see if there was still availability.

The good thing about it is that now you're on their email list you'll get the specials when they go on sale, im continually bombarded by them and am in the process of organising annual leave for the Wife and I to get a run in before our season comes to a close, the 4 night from Adelaide to Melbourne return fits in with our anniversary.

Its a dirt cheap holiday either way and i hope you have a great time.

We’ve done heaps of cruises... Was our “standard getaway and relax” outlet over the years... Many South Pacific ones, from 10-15 days.
A favourite was “Rock the Boat” These are once a year music themed cruises with live music in all parts of the ship most of the day and night. Rock the Boat 4 was Aussie bands and entertainers (apart from Sweet from UK)... Molly Meldrum was the MC and acts included Sweet, The Angels, Daryl Braithwaite, Mental as anything, The Choirboys, Richard Clapton, Jon English, Russel Morris, Angry Anderson, Vicky O’Keefe etc etc!
Brilliant stuff, not just seeing them perform, but eating, drinking and socialising with them!
Another fantastic cruise we did was a 18 day Mediterranean... Barcelona, Italy, Greek Islands, Malta, Turkey....
In my opinion, cruising is the best value and most relaxing vacation you can have!
You can do as much OR as little as you like!
One tip I’d suggest is pre-purchase a drink package! Will save you heaps, and much better than getting a rude shock at your bill on the last day!
Another tip is do your homework on each port and book your tours privately! (On board Cruise ship tour prices are criminal!)
Oh... One more, if funds permit... go a balcony cabin!. Sea breeze and sound of the ocean is magic!

In a “previous life” I worked out of Barry Beach (Eso/Bhp Bass Straight) doing the hydraulics on the Tidewater platform supply vessels... Southern Tide (long scrapped now?) was one I remember... Also the Lady boats... offshore tugs and dive support (don’t think Tidewater owned them?)
Hard work during the day and deepsea fishing at anchor points at night!...

Last time i worked out of Barry's Beach was around 2011-2013 with the same company as now, was on the Kipper Tuna Turrum (KTT) Project (McDermott's) installing a new Platform, sub-sea pipelines and upgrades out at the Bass Strait oil fields. The Lady boats (Farstad Shipping) where still there servicing the oilfields out of BB but Tidewater where out of the picture by then. Been up on the Prelude and Inpex jobs working out of Broome and Darwin for the last 4 years, industry has been pretty quiet of late though, hopefully the downturn has bottomed out and starts to pick up.......It's not a bad job

We did a Vanuatu / Noumea cruise many years ago and I still think it was one of our best holidays. I remember thinking how relaxed I was and realising I was only one 1/4 into the trip. I normally take a few days to get into holiday mode and leave work behind, so this was a great feeling.
Norovirus went thru the boat though and while we avoided it for the trip, I got the bug just as we were departing.....was a long flight back home but I still recommend a cruise holiday, just be sure to wash your hands a lot!

Very true that... (about Norovirus and washing hands with antiseptic gel)
Carnival... who also own P&O and Princess are the slackest for this... Years ago, every eatery had a crew member stationed at entrances with bottles of antiseptic gel and making sure you used the stuff...
Last time I was on a Carnival owned ship, It was more an “honour system”... And half the passengers ignoring the provided gel.
Royal Caribbean (who also own Celebrity Cruises) seem to take it more seriously... Celebrity ships even having infrared sensing toilet doors and taps etc, so no touchies...

You certainly have to be real careful, there are some ferals out there who treat the public toilets as though they were at home and fail to wash their hands after using them, you only have to hang around the pool deck for a few hours to see it.
I flat out refuse to use any toilet other than that in my cabin, its not fool proof, but definately reduces the risks.

Same with the pool, i wont set foot in the main pool, you'll find me down back in the adults area.
The first two cruises i went on kids spewed and crapped all through the main pool so it was closed for 24hrs whilst it had to be drained and cleaned.

When i go for food or a drink, first thing i do is look for the handwash.

Whilst we've been fortunate enough not to suffer a Nurovirus outbreak on the cruises we've been on, the risk is always there so its best to do whatever you can to limit your chance of exposure.

Loved it. Food at the Dragon Lady was Luke warm but the rest was excellent. The main part of Bass Straight was ok, but the closer to Adelaide we got the rougher it seemed to be. Apparently a lot of passenger and crew were affected although wife and I were ok.

Worse part was after making our way back to Sydney we decided to spend the night. This morning we received a call that a routine procedure my adult son had yesterday had a complication that resulted in the anesthetist using all her training to save him. Vocal cords spasmmed which then allowed a negative pressure aodema to occur. He spent the night and today in ICU on a respirator. This is the third time a standard procedure has nearly turned fatal. He didn’t tell us he was having anything done as it’s routine.
Quick trip to Canberra before finally getting home this evening. Back to Canberra tomorrow
