Default Im surprised Im still alive.

I picked up my car, a BA wagon, really cheap, paid like $100 for the car itself.
I was told it had been eating ball joints. I figured it wasnt really a problem at that price, even if I needed to replace the whole corner of the car id still be ahead. The front left bearing badly needed replacing but it drove fine, so I didnt think much of it.


Got into replacing the front left hub tonight and found this.

I very much doubt this setup is holding the specified 300Nm.

Haha, youre probably right since the hub was rusted to the spindle a bit


Bearing is toast though and wouldnt have made it much further.

Are we looking at the twisted wire?

it would still do the same job as the split pin that's supposed to be there, provided the wire wasn't too soft

not the best - but not life threatening.

I see, then not good enough. you can get wheel bearings with proper nuts & pins for around $100.

I'd say the real worry is if the PO has done that to a wheel bearing what has he done elsewhere

Yes, I’ve owned one car and one truck with that sort of risk profile. Found an undamaged, un-bodged taillight and felt like sending it back “You missed a bit”...

That's what it looks like inside the shielding ... but these are not aligned though.

They are normally called a PAC nut .... and it was is used from factory over the hub anyway. Should always get a replacement PAC Nut when replacing a hub really.

Hi. The BA (and the AU and falcons after the BA) did not use a split pin to stop the nut from coming loose. Instead the use a pac nut or caged nut made from multiple thin nuts in a pressed metal cage. As the bearing clearance is preset by a spacer between the bearing races the nut is done up to a very high torque value and becomes a self locking nut. Cheers MD

Mine was a $300 EB on dual fuel. That copped a set of retreads, two oil changes and an alternator belt.... Sold it three years later for $350. Was faultless and to this day had the best LPG/petrol switch ever....

It was just timing. An old mate saw me drive past in my beaten to hell AU. Someone in his family was trying to get rid of the BA that had been purchassed from a backpacker at the end of their stay. Yea, im a bit worried honestly. Ive already found a couple doosies. The bolt that holds the exhaust heat shield on must have been going in cross threaded. That thing must have taken everything they had to turn it more, but they managed to get it all the way in. Im actually quite impressed. Luckilly it has no other function.
One of the bolts connecting the two halves of the intake manifold had some locktite caked halfway along it. That bolt was obviously put in by feel, and they stopped when that locktite contacted the thread.
The thing that worries me about those two items... is that they most likely happened at the mechanics when the welch plugs were done... You bet your behind im keeping a close eye on those plugs :P

I have done burnouts in it, semi accidentally. Pretty sure thats what sped up the demise of the rear axle seal
