Howdy - I used to work for a BM dealership and had a pretty schmick workshop in its day. I agree with all comments thus far....especially the one about having space for 'The After Hours Project Car"...that is a must.
We had a wet room. A sectioned off area tiled and sealed with 3m acid resistant stuff that had a high pressure cleaner, parts washer, wash trough for hands and was also where we stored the big 1.5m x 1.0 m drain pans. Very handy room an used constantly. Remember that some stuff has to be bolted to the floor (unlike where i was) Presses, lathes, bench grinders etc all have to bolted down under OH+S I think. Brake Tester machine could aldo be included especially if its in NSW for pink slip testing - maybe able to get it combined with a dyno or at least in the same bay as a dyno. As well as a large tool room which doubled as a clean room & reference storage room. We also stored the rolling machines like A/C regassing machine, engine stands, transmission jacks and on-car injector cleaner. Make sure the door to your clean room is wide. (2 guys spent 2 days bulding a v8 engine up only to find it would fit through the clean room door - doh) We had what I can only describe as a junk room (4m x 4m)for filing job cards, warranty parts, rarely used drums of oil, the bosses race tyres, & other crapola that we wanted to keep out of sight. We had a bench with sectioned off area's at the entrance of the workshop for all the parts going out to sublet joints. Tyres, Heads, Radiators Trim bits where they could be stored with the purchase order - the result was that the driver used to come in and pick it up without needing any more instruction or needing to be shown where stuff was. It also meant that when stuff came back it went into the same spot. Pay attenetion to where the punch clock is for clocking on and off job cards - make sure it close to the office. Space around the workshop is critical - store as many things away from the work area as possbile in cupboards shelves etc - make sure they all have doors so that can hide the pile of crap that get stored in them and make the workshop look clean. Also have overhead airline retractors, not the coil ones that sit on the floor. Hmmm that all I can think of at present but I have enjoyed my trip down memory lane.. |
