Default TDCI auto

My daughter is about to buy another diesel mondeo. She did have a 2014 until some clown decided to hit her head on. Although she was badly injured, we were all so impressed as to how the car held up (It was a Ford Ranger that hit her) that she's decided to get another one. Are there any we should steer clear of with regards the auto box problems?

That's unfortunate she was injured in an accident but great to hear that the car proved itself enough to put your trust in another one to keep you all safe.

What model year are you thinking to replace with? MC or MD?

The only known common fault with the DCT450 Powershift used in Mondeo (MC/MD TDCi and also MC EcoBoost) is the input speed sensor failure, and at a certain point in time (2012?), a revision was introduced that supposedly addressed the problem. If the previous car was a 2014, then I assume you're not likely to go any older, so any car you look at should not be prone to the fault. The Powershift can still develop problems if it's not maintained properly so just make sure all scheduled oil changes have been done by the book and it should otherwise be a reliable unit.

MD EcoBoost now uses a conventional automatic gearbox and there's likewise no known issues with that.

Thanks for the info Mondaveo. Her trans was ok and only had 72000ks on it. Shame, it was a great car and had all the services. I'm anal when it comes to servicing.
It will more than likely be the MC but will have to get it modified with a left foot accelerator due to her injuries. Luckily her 12 month old daughter was uninjured. Her budget is about 15k for the car and there's quite a few around with lower ks. I was just a bit concerned about the gearbox. My wife has the 2016 titanium and loves it.
I've attached a photo of her car so you can see the damage. Impact speed was combined of about 120.

That's a dreadful wreck, lucky the outcome wasn't worse.

What's the cost for a left-foot throttle conversion? Will that need to be included in the 15K for the car?

From a quick squizz on carsales it appears 15K will just about get you into another 2013/14 LX or Zetec TDCi wagon, albeit one with more lifetime KM than your previous Mondy.

If you have to, the out-of-pocket cost to fix the faulty Powershift sensor issue (gearbox teardown, part replacement and reassembly) is around $2.5K - $3K. So not nice, but not the end of the world. If you buy from a dealer you'll get 3mo statutory warranty, and you can also buy a third-party mechanical warranty from the likes of NRMA/RACQ etc. Either should cover you if the issue arises after purchase, but it's a short window. If you're concerned about the transmission, get an OBD scanner and Forscan and check for TCM trouble codes so you can claim it during that warranty period.

Don't forget to replace the baby's car capsule. I think most major brands offer a free replacement in the event of an accident these days.

Lucky she wasn't in her previous car, a Hyundai i30. This one had buckles in the A pillar and dash so any harder an impact and I'm sure she would have been crushed. Although, she was told by her surgeon that her right ankle joint will need to be fused in the future and she'll be unable to go back to nursing, hence the left foot accelerator.
We've already replaced the baby seat but it's certainly good to see others have the same thoughts as us. Insurance came good.
A left foot accelerator varies on the design but round about $1200 will get a good one fitted. This will be paid for by TAC. (eventually through reimbursement)
I've got as scanner for the codes so there's no problems there.
Depending what's around at the time, there's been a number of reasonable cars with not so high k's. I've got an eye on one at the moment with full dealer servicing and will contact them to see of any problems with the car on Tuesday.
I'm just hoping she gets one as good as her previous one (minus the rearranging of the front).
And I'm sure if the need arises that Bank of Dad will come to the table.

Fixed price at Pickles may be an cheaper alternative to dealer cars. Look for full service history and also look at the logbook to see who the previous owner was.

Fixed price usually comes with the statutory 5,000km 3 month warranty. That budget could put her in an early MD with about 100K km.

I have bought my last 4 cars from Pickles, both at auction and fixed price. The only issue I have had was a speed sensor issue with my current Mondeo whilst in the warranty period. Mind you the first Mondeo only lasted 24 hrs before I was cleaned up by a truck.....

Well we ended up getting her a November 2015 TDCi with 72,000 ks. Full service history and it was (don't ask me why) an ex Toyota fleet car.
She had it 5 weeks and did a whole 300 ks before the dreaded Transmission Limited Function flashes up and it goes into limp mode. 3 times in 3 kilometers.
I checked the codes and came up with a generic P0766, shift solenoid 'D' performance or stuck off.
Lucky it's still under the statutory warranty. Toyota told me to book into the 'experts' Ford and they would pay. Apparently, and I quote Ford, 'there's more metal than oil in the transmission but the oil was clean so it's been serviced'. Toyota said to put it on a tow truck and return it to them.
At this stage, I have no idea where the car is or what Toyota are going to do. They didn't return my call on Friday so I'll ring again tomorrow. Fingers crossed for a good outcome.

I got about 2 weeks and 300km before mine did the same, also at 72,000 km on a 3/4yo car.

Thank god for stat warranty, and lucky for you it seems the Toyota dealer is doing the right thing by letting ford handle it. Exactly what the mazda dealer did for me, after a bit of convincing on my part.

Definitely. I got the call this morning. It's at the transmission specialist they use at moment. Apparently they've had 3 do this. I still can't get over the fact they use a Ford as a fleet car. Maybe they don't have any confidence in their own product.
What did they do with yours Manchu? Repair or rebuild?
And how is it? How many km is yours now?
No questions asked by Toyota. I loaded them up with information. They even asked what the code was. I'm dealing with the service manager. He seemed surprised I'd thrown the diagnostic on the car.

Mechatronic unit replaced, or something like that. About a $4-5k bill I believe.

2.5yrs and 50,000km since the fix and all good. It took me about a year to stop being nervous about any hesitation in the transmission.
