Default Convert 6 to V8..*****HELP*****

Hi Guys,

I’m doing this for a mate of mine who is converting a 1996 EL Fairmont I6 to a V8.

He has a complete 1996 EF ford falcon V8 (ex cop car) which he has taken the motor out of. He still has the EF so all parts are available to him.

What does he need to swap over, he has already stripped the EF V8 but has noticed the wiring is different from his 6 cylinder to the EF's V8.

Does he need an EL Fairmont V8 wiring harness? or just mod his current one (what needs to he changed)

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx
Jason

I hope he's not expecting much power increase with a stock V8 over an I6 :P

I can't remember if EF and EL V8 ECU's have the same pinouts, I'm assuming they are. He'll need to replace the engine loom, and the dash loom to get the TCU wiring, although he has a Fairmont so he'll need a high series loom to keep the climate control/trip computer etc working.

The transmissions won't bolt up either if he was planning on doing that...

IMO modding looms is an electrical nightmare waiting to happen, it's so much easier to replace the loom with a factory V8 one, especially if you have a donor car sitting there.

Good luck with the conversion, keep us posted on the progress of it.

He will need to use the V8 spec steering lines from the pump to the rack, use the V8 auto as mentioned before, V8 loom both inside and out.

Clusters I'm guessing would be different also.

Might be a stupid question, but maybe something to think about, will you need stronger springs in the front? I'm guessing the V8 weighs more than an i6?

Did the V8s have bigger brakes either? might be worth lookin at?

The annoying thing is that EF looms don't like mixing with EL ones. The best bet would to be to completely change all the engine looms, and it should be fine.

I did the swap on my ED wagon from 6cyl to V8, you will need to remove the dash from the EL, and remove all the 6cyl engine bay looms, that is, any loom that goes to the engine bay needs to be taken out and swapped.

You will also need to get an EL V8 high series dash loom as has been suggested, so that the BEM is right, as well as all the climate gear, etc...

V8's had the same brakes, so don't worry there.

The springs are different, but the weight difference is neglible, so that isn't too much of a worry.

Clusters in EF/L are all identical as they take a tacho read out from the ECU, so thats fine.

It is fairly straight forward really, just keep in mind that 90% of 6cyl stuff cannot be used at all on the V8 and you will be fine.

And remember... NEVER SPLICE THE LOOMS!
