i was talking to a local police officer about the new 530D's and he said they are impressed by the car but no more than a commodore, falcon or 300 srt, however they are very unimpressed by the repair cost
a light front impact is approx. $15k to fix where as the commodore or falcon got change from $5k
he thinks that due to this the 530d might be short lived and the move to kia stingers could be on the cards in urban areas

Reckon they are better off in a half-quick SUV. Higher ground clearance and plastic cladding make them a bit more urban-proof for crossing medians and curbs. The higher driving position gives better visability when responding in an emergency.

Always thought something like a AWD 2.0 Ecoboost Escape would be a good response vehicle. I know the Volvo XC60 T5 SUVs were very popular when the NSW highway patrol was using them, all wheel drive was handy on wet grassy verges and responding on dirt roads.

SA Police use AWD Commodores as general duties cars, maybe they may make more a good compromise between general duties and highway patrol. No more factory bull bars on the Commodore though, so some rural locations have swapped to hiluxes.

KIA Australia and Fujitsu have collaborated on a prototype of an artificial intelligence-enabled digital police car.

The high-tech police car does away with multiple screens, software, hardware and metres of cabling from highway patrol vehicles.

Instead, all the information that a police officer normally has access to via multiple devices is shown on a dashboard infotainment system, which bundles together technologies such as radar, number plate recognition technology, in car video equipment and the mobile data terminal (MDT).

“It’s the police car of the future,” Fujitsu Australia’s head of emerging technologies, Sundar Viswanathan, told Government News.


The Stinger’s digital dashboard bundles together a range of technologies.
The “artificial intelligence-enabled digital police car”, in this instance a Kia Stinger, can alert the driver if someone draws a weapon and send for back-up, Mr Viswanathan said.

The car also embeds biometrics in the gearstick, which removes the requirement for officers to log in to multiple systems.

“Fujitsu’s biometric authentication technology PalmSecure secures sensitive information, while three single-feature action buttons on the front of the gearstick control emergency lights and sirens, enhancing the safety of officers who are no longer required to take their eyes off the road to operate a complex control pad.”

Cost savings

The removal of multiple technologies and copper cabling throughout the car means reduced installation costs and improved fuel efficiency, Mr Viswanathan said.

“It also removes the time-consuming process of requiring multiple tenders from numerous individual suppliers for each piece of equipment.”

Having multiple technologies integrated into the infotainment system eliminates issues associated with airbag deployment, he added.

It also reduces problems associated with in-built personal computers and screens blocking the vehicle controls and air conditioning vents.

KIA national fleet manager Chris Forbes said the South Korean car manufacturer already supplies its standard Stinger model to the Queensland, NT, Tasmanian and WA police forces for use as highway patrol vehicles.

The Stinger, which is capable of accelerating to 100km/h in less than five seconds, has a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

“The Stinger’s core performance and safety characteristics have played a key part in the decision by state police forces to integrate the vehicle into their road policing divisions,” Mr Forbes said.

“We identified the amount of systems redundancy within the current vehicle fit-out and are excited to work with Fujitsu to push for a higher degree of integration of law enforcement systems within the Stinger.”

Inspiration for other service vehicles

Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand CEO, Mike Foster, said the high-tech vehicle could be applied to other emergency service vehicles.

“We believe this approach has a much wider application than just use within the police force,” Mr Foster said.

“Fujitsu is working to develop an enhanced vehicle ecosystem by extending the technology to meet multiple vehicle needs including ambulance, fire and rescue services, security vehicles and taxis.”

What about standardizing it nationally and getting something purpose built like Ford's police interceptor based on the Exploder?

Surely with quantities nationally it would be enough for a car manufacturer who makes a specific model for police forces to do something RHD.

Say 20,000 vehicles per year nationally shouldn't be a drama.

The way they add in everything on a standard car is an absolute joke, the cars are hacked up and all this crap run through them shoddily by all these 'second stage manufacturers'

One of the vehicle manufacturers I'm working with is trying to avoid their vehicles hitting third party workshops because it's creating false warranty claims through shoddy work.

Probably becoming more of an issue, cause of all these young punk meth heads ramming police cars trying to get away. Cops must be losing a car every week.

They were turning over cars every 40,000km when I was churning out VW Transporters for Vic Police, once it hit 40,000km it was decommissioned and sold at auction.

They must have improved their maintenance costs because the coppers are fussy about stuff like that . Apparently the general duties car for Tasmania Police is the Kia Stinger to mostly replace Falcons and Commodores.I think there's a few Toyota Aurions too but I'm not 100% sure to be honest.. Ford Ranger and Toyota Hi lux for Divvy vans and I guess the rural 4WD stuff will probably stay with Mitsubishi and Toyota as has been the case for a while .

Oh...I had a look and they only mentioned Stingers , Rangers and Hiluxes as some new replacements but it was dated a few months ago , don't doubt you at all so they've probably added in a few Subey's too going by that . How'd ya get on .Last time I got tugged was on a back street a year or so ago for a "random breath test". They were out of towners too not locals.. T'was about 10 pm on a Friday night .Thank God I had my licence on me in the old car because sometimes I forget it . Would have been a few bucks fine otherwise . Why in **** would we just not get 300s or Stingers. Surely they are big enough to do a cop pack?
