Default Samsung Galaxy S11/S20

Anyone else waiting on this one with baited breath?

Keen to see if the 5 x optical zoom is worth it for my 2 young ones sports days etc, or just grab an S10 once they start discounting them.

Thoughts?

I just bought a S10, brilliant phone and my first Android device after many many iPhones/iPods/iPads and an iMac (where I am typing this).

The camera is great, the three lenses cover mostly everything.

Personally though if you want a better pic you'd use a real camera with a real lens with proper zoom and a big sensor.

We're sort-of moving towards a camera with a phone attached when it used to be the other way around.

...although happy to admit I might be just getting old.

OK after much research, as Samsung's website doesn't seem to list it, it turns out it's only a genuine 3 x optical, the rest is AI smoke and mirrors, unless you go the Ultra which is 4 x optical. S10 is 2 x optical.

I don't rate the Samsung cameras to be honest. Just bought a Star Wars edition Note 10+ and the camera in my previous Sony Xperia XZ2 embarrasses it in every way. A shame Sony pulled out of the Australian market, completely underrated.

As I work for a carrier ... and was ready for upgrade anyway ... I have just put my pre-order in for an S20 Ultra last night.

I currently have a Note 8 ... and it has been a really top device ... that hasnt been an issue ... but will be a hand-me-down in the family anyway.

I don't want a Stylus anymore ... and don't use it .... so the S20 Ultra fits that bill with all the other associated extras (120hz refresh rate screen / camera / processor/ememry specs). Just at the right time for upgrade for me.

delivery date is 6th March.

Spending thousands on a phone is a huge waste of money in my opinion. I bought my wife a brand new Samsung A10 before Xmas, brand new direct from Samsung Australia for $195. I bought a J8 in 2018 for $300, amazingly they do everything we want them to plus some

People have far too much money if they can afford to spend $thousands on a phone

Yes I am old, but my opinion is just as important as anyone elses

I'm only doing it due to my staff discounts. After all discounts are applied it's only going to cost me $20 per month. That includes the plan itself for calls/data.

It's all relative I guess, my manager at work doesn't care what car he drives but has 60 pairs of expensive shoes, multiple fragrances and assorted designer brand clothes.

I don't understand it but he doesn't understand why I modify cars because they're just transport, but we don't make judgements on it.

It's nothing about being 'old', it's all about understanding different perspectives, you have an opinion but you lack perspective - we call that ignorance.

I've got two $400 cheapies I bought outright and they're both prepaid.

People have different hobbies and different priorities. What makes no sense to some brings great joy and satisfaction to others. People who work honestly to make a living are allowed to spend their money on anything they like, be it on expensive cars, phones, shoes, bottles of alcohol, flashy holidays, home décor, home entertainment, sporting gear, concerts, etc, etc. I'm sure you've purchased things that others will deem a huge waste of money.

Can I have the same?

I was always into phones and rooting etc but as we moved on I found myself doing it less and less as stock android was doing it all. I havent upgraded my Note8 yet as there has been nothing on the market that caught my attention....

That was until the Fold was announced! for all the flaws it had, it was a huge leap forward and now the Z is on its way, I want one.... but not at $2k!

My note 8 has been a great handset and still works pretty snappily for a 2+yo device with heaps on it. I'll still have my work Note 8 to use in the meantime.

The Z RRP on Samsung site was $4k when I last saw it. LOL

It has to be in something that small really.
And it's a case of multiple image manipulation via multiple cameras to do it.

Do Samsung still have that crappy curved edge or have they moved away from it now? My S8 was constantly cracking glass screen protectors, and phone covers only protected the top and bottom of the face because of that.

Startrack look to be delivering mine today ... was expecting tomorrow.
So I won't be home to get it ... I suspect it will be taken to my local post office as they are affiliated.

Even though there is someone home .... I had been advised by Optus that I need to sign and show my ID for it ... see what happens I guess.

I'm working from home tomorrow ... so can pick it up then if i don't make it to the post off this afternoon.

Default Re: Samsung Galaxy S11/S20

So .... I have had the S20 Ultra for 6 days now.
And taking time to set it up (as I've been really busy with work .... and still mainly using my Note 8 anyway.

Got the chance to take some photos at my Son's B'day last weekend ... and some dark fast moving shots in Timezone when he was at a party as well. And for out-of-the-box shots with no adjustment ... the clarity and colours are really good. I have not needed to make any adjustments.

When in a decent 5G area ... speeds are pretty good as well.

It looks like uploads are capped at 50Mbps as multiple tests seem to flatline at that.
Its reduces a little the further in the building you go (but still about 350Mbps in the middle of the office inside)

Had to turn on 120hz screen refresh rate ... and up the camera/video quality as it was only set to FHD standard.
Battery usage is hard to gauge at the moment as I've been mucking around with it a bit .... but it did drop off a little when I upped the screen refresh rate.
I havn't got the 45W super fast charger ... but Fast charging seems fine via wireless (I don't let it run down ... I have a wireless charger at work and home).

screen switching is really snappy (even with multiview running as well) .... but 12Gb of memory will help there.
Checking the stats though ... I have about 3Gb free while running everything on it.

The provided clear case is very gel-like as well ... and protects better than the thinner more brittle clear items that came with my Note 8.
Not much difference in outer dimensions compared to Note 8 ... LCD coverage is bigger though ... and S20 Ultra is thicker (but I think the cover aids in that).
It's heftier in weight as well .... but that's doesn't bother me too much as I'm used to larger handsets.

45W fast charger? Surely, that much grunt would boil a kettle!

Mind you.
the difference between 25w (standard wall charger) and the 45w (super fast wall charger) in times is about 5 minutes or thereabouts when charging from dead empty.

So it's not really worth the $60-ish for the charger.

Got one standard with the Note 10+, can go from 20% to 75% charge in about 20 minutes, not bad considering a 4300 mAh battery!
