What would you do?
2 offers on the table. One Vehicle has a build date Jan 2020, but requires some logistics and coin to get delivered. The other has build date Nov 2019, but comes with metallic paint that the misso is keen on, and is locally available. First one will cost about $650 more once transport is factored. The other with metallic paint which is an optional extra valued at $540. So we're splittin hairs.. Obviously if we were going to trade, like for like the newer the build date the better. But surely we can negotiate that down the track too. Or in x amount of years time, will maintenance history and general condition be more important than build date? Bloody tough one. Think of the future or support local business and keep the missus happy! Opinions welcome. |

You would of noticed numerous advertisements concerning "Plate Clearance Sales", with vehicles at reduced prices, extended warranties, free servicing etc.
If the dealership is only offering you a discount of $540 for metallic paint on a 2019 plated vehicle, compared to a 2020 plated vehicle, perhaps you should do a bit more shopping around. |

Mate I'd go in harder on the 2019 plated one. In the present retail motor industry climate, that dealership will be busting a gut to move a '19 plated vehicle that they have on the floor.
Offer them a price that you might think is a bit cheeky and then play hardball. You might be surprised at what sort of a deal you can wangle in the end. Mumma will think you're a jet for getting her a better deal on the car she really wants and will shower you with luvin' - it's a win-win! |

First of all, yeah, as others have said, keep the missus happy. For the next how many years you want to be driving around in the car that you want, not the build plate you want. Think of it like this, are you going to be driving down the road in 2 years time thinking, "Gee I hate this car, and the Missus hates me, but hey, thank God I bought the 2020 built plate model." In terms of trade-in time the build plates will affect it, even more so comparing a 2019 to a 2020. In the mind of the next buyer it will be not only a year older but also built in the previous decade and not the current decade. |

It depends on how long you plan on keeping it along with how many k's you put on it in terms of resale value.
If you plan on trading it in the next 2-5 years with low k's 2020 will have better resale value . If you plan on having it longer unless it has ultra low k's it wont matter either way.

If you want a investment go on the stock exchange
Assuming your not buying a Rolls Royce or Ferrari.... If you want a car buy the one that keeps HER and you happy and start by making an offer for less than you been quoted especially on the 2 month older vehicle as the longer it sits there the less it is going to be worth to the seller and you do have another option |

Exactly PG2.. That is what I am thinking regarding resale. On the other hand historically neither of us flip through cars. My current is a 2006 XR6T, which I've owned for 9 years. Hers is a 2010 Corolla she bought new. If the vehicle is easy to live with odds are it'll be here for a while!
Both cars are already heavily discounted from MSRP. Well aware of the plate sales and old stock moving. One dealer has said they have a 2020 built car they would move at their said pricing.. I haven't seen the VIN/build date/compliance date though so can't confirm it. It's complete apples to apples. Same make, some model, same trim, no added options etc. The colour probably isn't a deal breaker. Having it available local.. being able to support local business and not having to worry about transport etc is more what has drawn us to the metallic one. The paint is an extra, but we are already paying that difference in price based on the quotes. |

All negotiating is done. I'm at a price where we're happy. The only difference between the 2 quotes is the $540 for the metallic paint. IE both have come to the same base price. The metallic has a 2019 build with 2020 compliance. The other we have been told is a 2020 build. Any savings on the cheaper car will be eaten up by freight getting it from one end of the state to the other. The 2020 build is black, and while they look nice, they are hard to keep clean, show every scratch, and soak up the sun like it's going out of fashion as well. Something else to consider I guess. |

Quick bit of research at this end, only using redbook which sometimes isn't so accurate.. Appears the difference in 3-4 years time would only be around $2000. Kms and condition not counted.

In 10 yrs time when she goes to sell this one, it won’t make any difference to the price, just buy the colour she wants, you’ll never live it down.

Thanks everyone. Pretty much same conclusion I have come to over the last day as well. Even at 5 years on the difference shouldn't be that much it would be a deal breaker.
Happy wife, happy life. |

If they are both essentially the same price just buy the one you want. Who cares what the build date is unless you only plan on keeping it a couple of years.
Surely the decision can't be that hard? |

Here's something to consider when you're purcasing a car.
The sales people are usually extremely friendly & you get quick responses to your queries. Once you've purchased the vehicle, you won't be dealing with the sales team any longer, they'll be busy with other customers. You'll be dealing with the service department. As you are interested in supporting local business, I hope the service department at the dealership has a good reputation. |

Older build date on plate does not necessarily mean cheaper
Case in point - build date on compliance plate of a 1971 XY GT Falcon compared to a 2011 plated FG FPV GT which is 40 years newer:-)

Buy the one you can see and touch (provided you are happy with it). The other one could get damaged in transit etc which creates more issues in it self.
