Been batting this back and forth with my mate in the workshop.
Does (say) an 11A0700 belt have the same ratio of taper as a 10A0700? So the tip of the 10A will be 10/11ths of the 11A’s tip width? Or is it different? It came about from his insistence on using an 11A where the original was a 9 or 10A but the sheaves worn. “Same taper” he says, “It will just sit higher in the pulley”. No beer or pride is at stake, just a quest for the actual truth. |

Next you’ll want girls dancing on the bar!
Here’s the belt (OK, the packet) which kicked off the discussion. My mate contended this was the same cross-sectional ratio as 10A0545 (the spec’d belt for an application). So in fact, this would be just riding on the “root” of the belt, compared to the correct item? |

Gracias. So the taper is not constant, assuming the sectional drawings to scale?

Appears that way!
In my day, an A section belt was simply an A... It was 1/2” or around 13mm across the top. A “Z” was next smaller section being 3/8” (10mm) across the top. I’m talking industrial though. I’d suggest Jap auto makers were behind the A section increments?

Modern narrow-profile automotive belts (10A, 11A, 13A etc.) all have the same wedge angle of 34 degrees. 10A & 11A are interchangeable in most cases.
The old style industrial belts V-belts (A-size B-size etc.) are 40 degrees. An A-size is often interchanged for a 13A automotive & works fine. The 6 degrees difference between the two types equates to only 3 degrees per side, hardly noticeable with rubber to metal contact. Dr Terry |

Thanks. That figure of 34° is what I was unable to find.
