Common strange engine noise?

Hi everyone,
I have noticed a weird strange coming from the engine.

Both videos they said that it's common and to ignore it, even Ford said to ignore it (take that with a grain of salt, lol).

Wondering what you think and did anyone else notice this?
What did you do?

I've heard this noise before on my VR6 I had previously but that was definitely the timing chain.

Our 2008 build MA TDCi sounded just like that from new, and sounded just the same when it was sold in2018 after 104,000 km.

I'd offer it is normal and there is nothing to worry about.

In any event the engine has a timing belt from the crankshaft and a chain between the two camshafts. The chain apparently needs little attention, but the belt should be replaced every 160,000 km or 10 years, whichever comes first.

Any idea of cost to get those 2 belts done at the dealership?
My workplace is fairly close to one and rather they do it for me.
First one is timing belt and second one is accessory belt?

Hi again,

Ford have a "service calculator" that you can use if you go here:

It looks like about $1015 roughly for the standard service at 160,000km and the replacement of the timing belt and the accessories drive belt (serpentine belt) so since the standard service is $430 the belts will be somewhere in the region of $600.

However since you have not said what model vehicle and year the car is there could be some variation because the calculator makes the assumption that the car is an MD model.

This said, if the car is less than 10 years old and has not yet reached the 160,000km distance there isn't any need for the belts to be serviced, unless there is evidence of premature wear. Having watched the video, I'd be happy to attempt the change myself, but I still have 120,000km to travel and I'm likely to be swaping the car before that happens.

A timing belt kit can be picked up off eBay for around the $200 mark. The serpentine belt is a less than $30 item.

Just over a year left and it will be 10 years old.
I’ve done ~83k km. So still very far off. Just rather do preventive maintenance.

It’s an LW diesel from 2011 but shares the same engine as the Mondeo.

The calculator did not work for me.

Ah, I thought that you were asking about a Mondeo rather than the Focus your sig identifies.

The reason for the absence of a respose from the calculator might result from entering a 2011 date into the "year" field. Ford only allow a 7 year history (I think), but I would not expect there to be to much variation from the figures that I provided. You might get a better cost result from a mobile mechanic. As we have seen the job can be done "in vehicle" and you might save some expense by sourcing and supplying the hardware yourself.
