Default Engine shuts down when driving.

Hi. I need advice please for the following problem on my 2011 MC Mondeo diesel TDCI automatic.
On four occasions the engine has shut down while driving. On each occasion the ENGINE MALFUNCTION display came on. The first time I opened the MESSAGE screen and it told me I had a coolant problem. This was repaired and the car travelled for a further 1000ks (approx) without any problems. The next three occasions, again after travelling about 1000ks, the engine shut down, the ENGINE MALFUNCTION display came on and when I switched to the message screen it told me there were NO MESSAGES. The engine started first time on each occasion and the ENGINE MALFUNCTION did not display. I was also able to give the engine some revs without any problem. But as soon as I moved the gear lever from the PARK position the engine stopped, the ENGINE MALFUNCTION display came on and again there were no messages. On each occasion the roadside patrol person checked on the diagnostic tool but did not identify any faults. On each occasion I arrange to be towed to a different workshop, they each did their diagnosis but could find no fault codes. So far I have had the air conditioning condenser replaced, the engine fan replaced and the transmission serviced all to no avail. The car is currently in a workshop and the mechanic takes it out regularly to see if he can replicate the problem but to no avail.
I wonder if anyone else has experience this problem. I note that there are posts on engine stalls but none that appear to be exactly the same as mine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey thoco1. I'm not mechanic, but what you describe sounds like it could be a sensor at fault. My guess would be the MAF, oxygen, or fuel sensor. That might not be real helpful, but it's somewhere you can start.

Cheers.
Renz.

Does the engine actaully stop altogether or simply go into limp mode with much reduced power and RPMs. Noting Diesel Particulate Filter Fuel Vaporizer are common on these. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yop_...lZiKH&index=28 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Tm_...lZiKH&index=27

Hi, thanks for responding. The engine shuts down completely. When in the P position, the engine will restart first time and I can even increase the revs with no problems, but as soon as I move the shift out of P the engine stops, but will restart again ok. The problem has three different workshops baffled as they cannot find any fault codes which would enable them to identify the problem.

There might be some ideas in this Whirlpool forums thread https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2501917 Who does the servicing on your car and has the fuel filter been changed and changed correctly? Might be worth changing it again per https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHH3...&index=27&t=0s

Not at all into modern ECM automotive diesels but I have had the fuel shut off solenoid shut down a diesel truck a few times until I found the problem.

If there are no fault codes I'd say the next step is to monitor the vital parameters in real time. Forscan has real time graphing capability and I would imagine most mechanics are able to do that.

Or has it already been done?

No I haven't done it yet but it's next on my list. Thanks for your assistance.
