Foam pad behind glovebox - 1688729

I decided the other day to get on with the long-postponed job of changing the cabin air filter. I removed the glovebox for access, and an oddly-shaped piece of white and grey foam fell down out of the dashboard, which I couldn't figure out how it was meant to fit back in with the glovebox assembly. The foam piece looked like this (stock photo):

It had a sticker with a notice "DO NOT REMOVE" and a part code AG9T-48781-BB. After some Googling I learned (via eBay listings) it was an "Energy Absorbing Foam Pad" and also goes by the part code 1688729, which led me to this exploded view diagram at ford.7zap.com/en/car/39/, but I couldn't find anything else about it. Mine had a square of adhesive residue and was kind of bent and creased, suggesting it had been stuck to and around something. I'm guessing now it may fit somehow to the passenger-side airbag, but at the time I couldn't work out where and how that would be.

Can anyone advise me the correct placement and orientation for this weird thing so I can put it back in properly, please?

Back in April I also changed this filter for the first time (bugger of a job),
This part also fell out for me,
Can remember those 2 cuts outs, top left on picture, was able to orientate it and they fitted into some tabs or something,
Don't remember if foam was up or down,

I've got two of them in a drawer in the shed.

They've been there since I first did the filters and they fell off about 5 years ago.

From memory I think they were originally stuck on the glovebox, underneath was it?

Can't remember which way.

Could they be for noise reduction? Noise is energy right?

I also have four plastic bags of foam which came out from above the front wheel arches.

I have seen this in a youtube vid there stuck to the top of the glove box and then wrap toward the back. Mine does not have this ? maybe missing.

Thanks for the links AussieG6. This thread is about the MC/Mk4 Mondeo, but was interesting to watch the process on the MD/Mk5 (Alan Howatt as always giving a good instructional of the process), looks like the job is improved somewhat on the newer model.

I then found Mr Badgertronix has a video for the Mk4 which gives us the answer: https://youtu.be/tVJEMVUTpUQ

At 3:00 his glovebox comes out with the foam pad adhered to the underside! I was sure it fell out of my car from above and was trying to work out how it fit into the dash. Now I know so I can refit it properly. (Also reminds me my door for the filter slot has been broken by someone in there before me, I should try to get a replacement for next time.)

Good God that's allot to get through just to replace the pollen filter but the same principle with the padding I think it's to reduce noise from the fan motor.
