Exclamation FOTON Big General F150 Copy

"What you’re looking at is not a poorly-modified Ford F-150 Raptor, but instead a wannabe Raptor from a Chinese automaker by the name of Foton.

The vehicle is dubbed the Da Jiang Jun, which translates to ‘The Big General.’ It is being readied to make its public debut at the Beijing Auto Show on September 26 and mimics the look of the F-150 so closely that we wouldn’t be surprised to see the American automaker pursue some kind of litigation against Foton over it.

According to Ford Authority, The Big General is more similar in size to a Ford Ranger than the F-150 Raptor, but it is clearly the latter that has served as design inspiration.

Read Also: 2021 Ford F-150 Configurator Shows How Affordable (Or Expensive) The New Pickup Can Be

Up front, the truck features a large Foton badge while it also has headlights virtually identical to those of the F-150. While we don’t have all that many detailed images, the ones we do have reveal that, from the sides, the truck also closely mimics the look of the Ford.

However, whereas a genuine Raptor features a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6, Foton will sell its pickup with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and two diesel units displacing 2.0-liters and 2.5-liters respectively. Power details for the diesels haven’t been announced, but it is understood the petrol engine produces 238 hp.

Coupled to the engines is a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission; it remains to be seen if The Big General is front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive."

Ford blocked the 2012 JAC 4R3 so this copy should suffer a similar fate.

The Chinese simply have no shame. They got away with it because the CCP would never rule against chinese companies.

But i'm not sure if that has been changing recently?

I'm Surprised at the Diesel Engine mentioned.
Considering they use 2.8 & 3.8 Litre Cummins ISF's in their other Utes & light Trucks..

Not sure that General Motors (remember them ?) would take kindly to a Chinese Ford lookalike called "The Big General"......... 'cause nothing could be bigger than GM USA.

“Big Man!” is a colloquial insult in quite a lot of languages. Obviously not Chinese!

They actually ruled in favour of Jaguar Land Rover a couple of years back surprisingly

I'd imagine that was more the exception. There does not seem to be much disincentive for them to not do it unlike here.

Western corporations are slow learners.
Originally, the Chinese government had planned for local brands to rise in popularity and replace
most of the foreign brands on sale there but Chinese consumers like western brands and don't
want to give them up. So the next step is obvious, domestic brands start to copy western vehicles
all with the approval of the Chinese government.

Meh
So it looks a bit like a Ford?
I'd be more concerned if they were actually ripping off technology, rather than design cues.

During the 2nd World War, the British designed disposable Light Carriers, that were cheap and fast to build, and had a planned service life of 3 years.
After the end of the war, 3 were completed and 1 loaned and two sold to Australia.
HMAS Sydney was converted to a Troop-Ship & Helicopter Carrier because it could not handle jets.
HMAS Melbourne had been modified for jets, but even so by the 70's could not accommodate modern aircraft. It was sold for scrap in the early 80's after exceeding its planned service by over 35 years. It was considered so obsolete that almost nothing was salvaged form the ship before being sold for scrap.
The Chinese bought it, and studied it to learn how to build aircraft carriers.

(In an interesting footnote, at the time Melbourne was being retired, her sister-ship, the "Venerable"/ "Karel Doorman"/ "Veinticinco de Mayo" was still in service with the Argentine Navy, but spent the Falklands War hiding after the British threatened to sink it if she left port.)

It looks a lot like the F150. They rip off everything they can, it's basically state sponsored.

Funny you bring up the HMAS Melbourne because while we made it inoperable no doubt they learned from it.

We thought nothing of it then but no way we would do the same thing today.

Huh? It’s nearly a full rip off at the front end.

And no doubt they are stealing tech as well.

Sad thing is you have more chance of this being sold here than Ford making RHD F150's and selling them here.

The Koreans are able to do it. Look at how well Kia and Hyundai are doing now. But even in 2020 can't even do it.

Even with the rapid rise over a couple of decades they still can't deliver one solid car that anyone wants.

One of the very early Chinese utes (the one with the funny oval looking headlights) had VW actually stamped on the headlight lens.

Turns out VW were toying with a smaller than Amarok ute, developed in China. Then the project got canned the headlights managed to find themselves on the Chinese ute.

I guess with everything made there and widespread corruption it was bound to happen.

One of the better of the Chinese offerings.

I like it - probably 1/3rd the price of a 150 and RHD. I'd just drop a Raptor grill on it and job done.

Why though? Just be proud of the big communist company name on the grill. Own it and be proud.

What's the bet that it's based on Foton Tunland mechanicals, the one that will be sold here in RHD?
Cummins 2.8 TD, ZF 6-speed auto, Borg Warner dual range transfer case and Dana Limited Slip Differential

if It ever makes It down here??
My money would be on it having the 3.8 Cummins. As Foton own the factory in a Joint venture with Cummins..
