It’s interesting where the market values features over originality. I know of a bloke in Philadelphia who this year took an original but somewhat patinæd ‘67 Mustang notchback and made it into a fastback with assorted NOS and reproduction parts. The appearance was otherwise preserved; it now resembles an original fastback with “patina”.

And to touch on an unrelated collectible, not sure now but for a period of time it was value-clever to buy an original pre ‘58 Gibson Les Paul Standard (AKA “Gold Top”) and make it into a “tiger top” replica of the ‘58-‘60 sunburst finished models. It didn’t matter if this literally took months, the net gain was a very good wage.

So you’d think that a true, faithfully “HO’d” XY would have a fairly elevated place in the market where people are actually paying - not just knocking from afar.

Funny you mention the LP, we have an L Series Jaguar that someone in the 80's 'boganised' cutting the body to be more like a strat at the base of the guitar. As such it is not museum worthy, but I like to think we have the only '64 'Jagocaster' in existence...

Hi Guys,
I see the barn find GTHO the one with (no motor in it) went for over $400k at auction.

After the car was sold it was revealed that the 32 dents across the cars bodywork came from an axe attack.
It has been estimated that it will cost somewhere in the ball park of $ 200,000 to restore it back to its original glory. "its good to have that sort of money".

Where did you read that as this thread is about that very same car and it was passed in at $350,709 as its reserve was not met.

Was it reauctioned ?

When they are passed in the highest bidder gets to negotiate with the seller - so could have still sold for $400k post-auction.

I can only go on what ive read and seen on TV.
The GTHO was Auctioned off by Grays Online in Australia and this story is from NZ Autocar.

Bidding for the roughed up muscle car closed at AU $350,000 ($377,000) failing to hit reserve.
But according to a report by 7News Melbourne the Falcon was then later sold to a Bidder, sight unseen for a settled AU$400,00 ($431,000).

Link to NZ Autocar report....

http://www.nzautocar.co.nz/autocar-n...r-over-400-000

RUINED BARN FIND FORD FALCON GTHO SELLS FOR OVER $400,000

Quote:
Disheveled, engineless, and coated with dents, in another universe this 1971 Ford Falcon would have been long scrapped. But, last week, it instead sold at auction for an eye-watering sum.

NZ Autocar detailed the Falcon late last month; a Phase III GTHO that was missing its Cleveland V8 engine, modified with flared arches, and left untouched in a barn for 36 years.

Auctioned off by Grays Online in Australia, bidding for the roughed up muscle car closed at AU$350,000 ($377,000) — failing to hit reserve. But, according to a report by 7NEWS Melbourne, the Falcon was then later sold to a bidder, sight unseen, for a settled AU$400,000 ($431,000).

The report unveiled all sorts of new information about the Falcon, too. For instance, the 32 dents all over its bodywork apparently came from an axe attack. The car also raced, too, in the hands of its former owner Armando Perri.

To restore the car back to stock is expected to cost in the ballpark of AU$200,000, making the Falcon a AU$600,000 pet project for someone out there wanting an example of Australia’s most iconic sports sedan.

The question in the NZ Autocar office is whether the run-down Falcon is worth the coin. Past examples have sold in the region of AU$700,000, but those vehicles are numbers-matching, unlike what this Falcon will end up being assuming it receives a restoration.

Post-Covid-19, the classic-car market appears to be in excellent health, with numerous auctions out of lockdown netting positive results for sellers (including this one, it appears).

The classic car market is about more than just the pristine, too. As it becomes easier to track a vehicle’s history, more collectors are investing in cars that tell incredible stories. And, there’s little doubting that this Falcon tells a heck of a yarn.

It is all about supply, demand and timing

Given what both cars sold for it makes this look like a good buy which sold recently. But someone wanted the Chicken Coupe and someone wanted the Phase three, both needing a resto.

https://www.australianmusclecarsales...-phase3-244096

the market is very very small when we talk about half a million dollar cars for both sellers and buyers!!

thanks
