Default how do you get a mp3 to sound like a tape playing

hi

for all you computer people out there was wondering what software there is to make mp3 files sound like the 80s/90s cassette tapes playing and how do you and what settings do you use in the software to get the sound of a tape playing to be able to export it to a new mp3 file.

would like to get the sound of a tape playing but preferably without film getting chewed up like it did in the 90s.

if anyone knows of software to be able to do it and be able to export file as a new file that would be great.

found a emulator for it but want to be able to export it as a new file

can only think of using another computer as a recorder with recording software loaded and use the other one to play it and plug a cord in or try hunt down the original tapes and get a tape to mp3 converter

thanks

you could try Audacity. It has plug ins and effects that might do what you want to do

The usual purpose of audio utilities is to remove the various artefacts that come from vinyl and tape mechanisms but there are probably a couple of things you can do to an MP3 file to make it sound closer to audio tape:

1. Reduce the frequency response to about 15 kHz as that was about all the format was good for.
2. Introduce a tape 'hiss' at around 500 Hz - most audio software will have a tone generator to do this.
3. If you want to get more authentic, you could add a small amount of low-level pitch modulation (probably using vibrato) to simulate the effect of tape transport.

Of course, you could just record your MP3's to a tape recorder.
