Default Ford GAF V-8

WW2 US tank engine. 1100ci (18 ltrs) 500 ponies, 32 valve, all alloy 60 degree V8. Dont know what I would do with it, but I want one.

Imagine the fuel bill.

A great tow engine 1,000 pound-feet (1,400 N·m) of torque from idle to 2600 rpm

Americans are more into the 'sport' of connecting a chain between the tow balls of 2 trucks and seeing which could pull the other one backwards. This engine would be perfect.

Ford GAF GAA GAN V8s were derived from Ford's stillborn V-12 aero engine.

AMG was just a gleam in Adolf's eye when this engine was built ..

I find it amazing that in the early 1940's Ford developed this amazing all alloy 32-valve DOHC 60-degree V8 engine for use in a plane but it ultimately went into the Sherman tank.

Yet in later years they developed lumps of iron single cam pushrod engines for their cars and only now a Mustang gets an all alloy DOHC 32V DOHC engine.

Fords history could have been entirely different.

And so many rice boys will claim the Japs invented DOHC and 4-valves per cylinder....

It was around in the 1930s! Just the economics of making them in production car volumes, at the required accuracy, destined for affordable cars, wasn't so crash hot.

Actually saw one of these monsters in a shed here in Melbourne.

It's physically HUGE.

All Alloy, DOHC, Gear driven, (No belts for cams or water pumps or fans to fail), flat plane crank. And it into production in 1940, so must have been developed in the late 30's, That's a cool 80 years ago.

I'd drop one in a early F350 or something equally daft.

Anyway, as you were.

In our era where everything is computerised we seem to naively think that we invented everything cool ..

By 1904 the land speed record was over 100mph (160km/h), in a time when horses still ruled the roads. Around this time the first of the OHC engines were being produced.
By the time this tank engine was being churned out for WWII we'd hit over 350mph. Aircraft engines were being multi-staged boosted; multi-speed superchargers and turbos .. and NOS was being fitted to bomber interceptor aircraft.
In 1939 Packard offered AC in it's cars. 1940 Oldsmobile/Cadillac offered the first "normal" automatic transmission with torque converter and planetary ge****t.
ABS systems were developed for aircraft in 50s/60s .. including the Concorde. In 1971 Chrysler offered an electronic 3-channel ABS for its Imperial lineup.
In 1974 Cadillac and Oldsmobile offered airbags in it's full sized cars.
...
Most of what we've done lately is refining and cheapifying stuff invented a long time ago.

It was a cutdown of a V16 and was used on the Sherman Tank.

I had a 29-litre Continental V12 diesel from a tank in my shed for a couple of years.
Bought it from the army surplus auction, and were thinking speed boat, but ended up selling it to Sweden instead. The one in this video is from Sweden, probably the same one!

It had 3 hours running time after factory overhaul, and had factory tags attached. It came with an Allison auto gearbox from the tank. Imagine I could have built a tractor pulling drag racer of it just by bolting on two back wheels. Would have been cool.

The flat plane crank allows for a more free-reving engine and usually a higher RPM limit, but is harsher because it lacks the counterweights of a cross-plane crank.

Most likely chosen for simplicity in this application.
