I have acquired a 26" slasher type mower, with 7 hp Kubota engine. Appears to be a locally (Perth WA) built machine about 20 years old. Currently set up with a single bar type blade to rotate anti-clockwise, (looking from above). Would like to modify the very basic chassis to add a discharge chute exiting to the right. This would necessitate running blade(s) clockwise, could then also use a conventional blade bar with two off the shelf swing-back blades.
Looking for info. 1. Could the single (appears to be 20 mm) nut on the vertical shaft holding the blade be left hand thread ? (nut is 30 mm across the flats) 2. Has the rotation be made anticlockwise so that the said nut does not loosen? I have not as yet been able to loosen this nut. The bar type blade appears to be clamped to the shaft between two very heavy washers by this nut. Help based on experience would really be appreciated. |

Has been painted darkish green, no visible brand or manufacturer. Evidently was at one stage used by a Bayswater equipment hire company.

Like CB said left hand thread otherwise the blade will work loose... Put a socket on it and give it a turn, only way you'll find out for sure.

Pictures
Anti clock from above is clock wise from below which would be normal direction if nut is accessed from below Rattle gun and wd40 may be required after 20 years of operation Assume this is belt drive and your going to try figure 8 on the belt which can cause belt to come off |

As I asked in the deleted companion thread could it be an Alroh or Mey (likely if it is WA Made). If so, or in any event, posting a picture here https://www.facebook.com/MEY-Equipment-138415729608647/ might get some more information.

For some strange reason I believe it is made overseas, surely Aussie made would run a Briggs & Stratton power unit?
Kubota sounds everything Asian to me? Especially the colour! Cheers Mr W Last edited by slowsnake; 01-08-2021 at 07:59 PM. Reason: Add a bit |

A nut that size and spec, may be cheapest to reproduce on a lathe, using a cheapish (relatively speaking) tap. A quick browse saw one for $66 posted.

Alroh made all sorts of mowers, turf equipment and similar items. Yes they are best know by the home gardener for reel mowers but they produced a diversity of products trying to survive against the imports.
For example, this is an Alroh :

the attached pic is my Deutscher.
Usually painted in green, I re did mine in black, so it goes faster. Actually used POR paint as it looks good and is better wearing. It is many years old, but just keeps on going, and cutting like a beast. I have a slasher behind my tractor, but the Deutscher is great for the difficult areas, including under trees, and on rocky ground where it can get in close. It is very tiring to use, although it is self driven, it is extremely difficult to turn and operate. I ignore common sense and operate it with the guard open, as it throws out lots of cuttings. With the guard down it tends to jam. Parked alongside equally old, but reliable John Deere. |
