Sump plug

I'm hoping this is an easy question but I've bought a sump plug before and even though it was supposed to be the right one it did not fit...

Looking to avoid that happening again as I really need to change it next service as my uncle said it wasn't in good shape.

I have a DW10C engine with engine code TXDB.

Guys.
I'm getting my third service (oil change) tomorrow. I've got 22,500 on the clock.
As aussi points out, the manufacturers recommend replacing your drain plug (if it's plastic) at each service. I haven't replaced mine yet, and have not been advised of any leak from my local service center. That being said, I am supplying a new one for the service tomorrow. It's plastic with an o-ring, so yer makes sense.

I know SCA have mine incorrectly on their database. I then tried smart-o-seal sump plug. It fits the thread but the integrated washer of the head is too big for the recessed hole and fouls on the sump. My threads are crossed and almost stripped from the pervious owners workshop (darra ford) idiots. They also chewed up the original plug which I replaced but next service I'm repairing it. DW10 mine is. M14 x 1.5

I tried the smart-o-seal as chosen by the SCA selector tool. It was completely the wrong size. Funnily it no longer shows any sump plug on their website when using the tool so I can't remember what it was.

I did buy a new sump plug from Ford but lost it when I built a new shed. I also don't have a copy of the receipt which would be handy. I'd rather know what it is because once I went to VW and their part selector tool at the dealer gave the incorrect part for my Golf, surprising I know.

Any recommendations?

DW10C engine fitted to Focus, Mondeo and Kuga take plug 9M5Q 6C855 AA (includes seal) or you van buy the seal 9M5Q 6734 AA separate. Only a few dollars from Ford.

I visited my parents and looks like dad cleaned up his garage and I found both sump plugs.
The smart-o was an F3 which is a M14 x 1.5, it did not fit.
The Ford one is an M13 x 1.5 which I'm not sure if it's for the Territory as my dad was also looking for the one he bought and not sure if it's the one I bought.

M13 does sound strange but I do vaguely remember the F3 (M14) being too big.

Maybe the Focus has a different sump fitted? Odd.

I did the oil change on the 2011 MC deisel today.


Sump plug diameter is 10mm.


I used the same plug and washer about 15 times.
Time for a new washer.
I position the washer the same way it came off.
The impression from the seal is different each side.
The torque spec is 35 Nm.
Easy to overdo.
I've never tried it but
I've heard you can anneal the copper washer
so it squashes a bit more.

I forgot to buy the parts when I was there for a new battery last week. Anyway, confirmed that the sump plug I had is not for my car that I had. Sump plug for SY Territory is $30 by the way and that’s employee pricing, ridiculous.

The good news is I had zero leaks with my current one, but definitely on the list of things to buy next time. Lockdown is making it difficult to go out but this should last me till next year.

Yes, the size is M10 * 1.25 with a 21mm hex head. Smart-o plug number 28. $23.

I wonder how often the smart-o plugs can be re-used before the seal wears out.

If the seal expands on contact with oil that would seem to make it a different size after the first use.


Would be worth it if it lasted 10 times I guess.

I've used one of these in my wifes Mazda 3. (Different plug size)

The oring seal, on the thread, seems to have been lost but the plug and washer are still in great nick. This after 4 oil changes with No detectable leaks.

I ordered the sump plug as it's 20% off at the moment along with some other things.
Moving closer to work and lockdown means I do less km so my oil should last me until the end of summer at least.

Is the MB TDCi sump plug meant to have a washer?

The first time I changed the oil myself, I noted that it did not have a washer and assumed it was meant to be that way. It was almost oil tight, but was leaking a decent amount of oil at the last oil change. The Haynes manual shows a copper washer on the plug, so I went to the dealer and they sold me the same washer.

I even dusted off the torque wrench to tighten the sump plug!

Yes should have a gasket, part number 3M5Q 6734 AA is what you should have got.

Plastic sump plug.
What an idea.
I had my old sump plug in FG for 8 years.
I replaced it just because I wanted to (not because it was leaking).
Another reason not to buy a Mondeo.
I suggest you change the sump plug as advised by Ford. Makes it more expensive.
Or if you can find a metal aftermarket replacement, that would be be better. You just replace the washer(50 cents) instead of replacing the sump plug each time which costs 25$!

Just wanted to let everyone know that while there were extremely slight differences between the OEM plug and the one I bought from SCA, the plug worked.

NZ_XR6, yes, there’s a copper washer on the OEM sump plug.

I've had my MC Mondeo for 5 1/2 years, and have re-used the sump plug and washer 30+ times. Still not leaking. Copper washer is starting to look a little worse for wear though
