Next Ford Focus could go all-electric – report

Ford's small-car icon could go electric for its next generation, in line with the Blue Oval's push towards a fully-electric line-up in Europe.

The Ford Focus small car nameplate will switch to electric power in the coming years – according to overseas reports – as Ford's European division looks to ditch petrol and diesel power by the end of this decade.

British publication Autocar reports plans for an electric version of Ford's small car are well progressed.

In Autocar's interview with Ford of Europe chief designer Murat Gueler, he said: “Everybody’s launching electric cars and we will launch a few in the future."

"Definitely, we’re looking at everything: proportions, architectures … we’re really busy designing all the next-generation cars. There’s a lot of work going on."

Little else is known about the new model – which could wear E-Focus or Focus Electric branding, following past and current Ford naming conventions – though Autocar notes the electric hatch will likely launch "in the coming years".

With the end of the current Focus expected in 2024 or 2025, and Ford of Europe's commitment to switch its entire car and SUV range to plug-in hybrid or all-electric power by mid-2026, it's likely the electric Focus would arrive for the nameplate's fifth generation – in doing so spelling the end of pure petrol or diesel power.

Alternatively, Ford could opt to apply the Focus nameplate to its upcoming "volume all-electric passenger vehicle" confirmed for production in Cologne, Germany in 2023 – widely rumoured to be based on Volkswagen's MEB modular electric platform – which would see the electric Focus sold in showrooms alongside its Saarlouis, Germany-built, combustion-engined sibling.

Meanwhile, Ford Australia has committed to introducing "at least five" electrified models locally by the end of 2024, with the mix to "largely" comprise all-electric vehicles – suggesting at least three EVs for local showrooms, including the E-Transit van due in mid-2022.

Whether the electric Focus would make the list remains to be seen, given the Blue Oval's local arm recently axed 'standard' ST-Line and Active versions of the current Focus for 2022 – following slowing sales and a shrinking small-car segment – leaving the ST and ST X hot hatches as the only Focus variants still on offer in Australia.

Ford fans will note a mid-2020s model wouldn't be the first zero-emission Focus ever built, as a simply-named Focus Electric was offered in the US from 2011 to 2018 (based on the third-generation model), pairing a 107kW electric motor with a 33.5kWh battery (from 2017 onwards) for a claimed driving range of just 185km.
