Ive been thinking about this for a while. Generally, the XY GTHO has been considered by most (that I know of) as the best Australian built Ford. It has cult status, and theres alot of holden fans who admit they would have one if possible.
I think the 'Phoon is definately a challenger IMO. It has cult status within the Ford 'community' and theres quite a few holden fans who admire the 'Phoon. Any opinions, or am I an idiot? |

I have three best Fords. I know Im only allowed one but I cant seperate them. The first is the Typhoon (duh) second is the XY GTHO phase three (or 4 for that matter), and the third, T3TS50.

well i agree allbeit it is not entirely on performance that i like to rate a car by i still think that a ba / bf gt or gt-p are inline. the xygtho is now outdated and not the most powerfull ford performer by a log shot . any ba gt eclipses it. however the f6 has an amazing engine. instead of having an xy gtho next to my ba gt now . it would be a typhoon and or territory ghia T .

The XYGTHO was a unique car with alot of power for it's time, and the F6 is the same now. A 4L inline turbocharged 6cylinder capable of quick 1/4 mile times stock.

Top 5 for me... Falcon wise are...
1. FPV F6 Typhoon 2. Ford TE50 AUIII 3. Ford Falcon XR8 Sprint (ED) 4. Ford Falcon GT (EB) 5. Ford Falcon GT-HO PhaseIII (XY) Yes... there's a big gap from 1971 to 1992...

I know which one could do a hard stint in a 24 hour race at Bathurst and do it all over again the following day? Definitely no brainer. I personally can't separate the t3 and typhoon, both very different and competent motor vehicles. One is a race track bred specialist built for enduro's while the other is a 1/4 mile pro with as much street cred as jeniffer hawkins.

I'd have to disagree. The XY GTHO just has waaaaayyy to much on the Phoon. Don;t get me wrong, the 'Phoon os a great car. However it just hasn't won the races the XY has. It's called Bathurst cred.
Plus the XY GTHO Phase 3 laid claim to the fastest 4 door pruction car for a very very long time

The Phoon has proven itself on the Street & Strip, if it proves itself a winner in the Australian performance Car Championship (GT Killed it last year by the way) then i will put it at #1...
Untill then i have a few cars infront of it. |

The phase 3 was faster top speed by a long shot to 350 Monaro's, E49's and even standard GT's.
It was over 1 second quicker over the 1/4 than a standard XY GT or 350 HG/HT Monaro, it was 3 seconds quicker to 160 k's than a standard GT or HT/HG Monaro. You cant even compare, the P3 to a Phoon, as much as i love the Phoon's the P3 is just waaayyy in front. **EDIT** For its day...

The Typhoon is a great car for sure, but comparing it to a Phase 3 ?
When it holds the worlds fastest sedan record and wins Bathurst a few times i'll consider it. |

As soon as I saw this thread thought it might stir up some emotions. As these are both road cars ask which would you rather go on a long drive in and which would you feel better emerging from when you get there? Hard comparison for two cars so completely different and far apart. Would love a Ph 3 myself but for all around ability its the Typhoon. If you raced the two around Bathurst for race cred I reckon we all know which would win and I doubt it would be the HO.

Seriously I think its got some way to go yet to claim that title, but it's definately a contender IMO. It's only into it's second generation at this stage. I reckon in a model or two's time it's going to be larger than life.

of course the current offerings are faster than a XYGT, i'd be ashamed of ford if they hadnt come up with anything in the last 30 plus years to make a quicker car. i'm sure there are a ton of cars on the market that would beat a XYGT in the quarter, but i certainly aint calling many jap turbos LEGENDARY. ask any one what a (XY) GT is and they'll know, ask them bout a typhoon etc and they'll know if they love cars. takes alot more than a fast engine to make a legend.
but i dont think much of new cars and would never get one, i like to have something slightly DIFFERENT to whats on the roads at the moment, and no not just by having some different headlights, bodykit and big wheels, i agree with dodge, after XD i wouldnt want one. if i had to buy new car i'd go holden just so i could have a coupe and an LS2. if you've driven a tough GT or similar you'll know the jaw dropping stares, points and cheers/fists in the air from other motorists and pedestrians. cant say i reckon you'd get that much in a typhoon or similar great cars, but me thinks not legendary |

On the world stage, the P3 was king of the 4 doors, i read somewhere that they had to use a Lambo as a chase car to take photos of it, because nothing else would keep up !!! It was 9 seconds quicker to 120MPH than the 300SEL 6.3 Benz !! and that was a bloody fast car then ! not to mention Jags, BMW's etc...... Lets all not get into a useless debate, that was then and this is NOW, and the Phoon is a awesome piece of machinery, easily the best Australian performance car on the market

You have to realise when comparing these two, the era's were different. Factory stock cars are no longer used in this country's premier motorsport category (V8 Supercars), so the F6 Typhoon is obviously not going to be winning Bathurst any time soon.
GT-HO XY was a better performance car then any of its domestic rivals at the time - and so is the F6 Typhoon. GT-HO XY was a world class performance sedan, and unintentionally the fastest four door in the world. F6 Typhoon has once again lifted Aussie sedans to world scale (ie: RS6, E55 and M5 level) where they have not been since HSV's GTS300 beat the old M5 in 2000. It is the only domestic sedan capable of competing with the big German three benchmarks, and that is most impressive. It is easily a much better car then the XY GT-HO. History not withstanding, it does everything better, its 34 years newer... it's much, much faster etc. But at the same time it is an unrealistic comparison. How do you compare a car form 1971 to a car from 2005? You don't. Typhoon is the kind of 2005/06. HO was the king of 69-71. Different eras, different cars. So really, they're both the best Ford sedan ever - in their own era's.

--------------------------------------------------------------- How do we compare, its to hard.. Lets wait for the F6 when it takes on the rest of the best PERFORMANCE cars in the world, cars that are worth up 6 times the F6 price tag. Surely if it can finish in the top 3 it would have to be Fords best Performance car.. As its the current best performance car in Australia . "Now that FPV's Typhoon has won the Aussie round of PCOTY, it receives an automatic entry to the Grand Final testing where it'll do battle with the best performance cars in the world." Bring It On

The Typhoon is no doubt a technically superior car to a 30 year old HO and a very nice car as well.
That's where the comparison ends. The HO was an awesome car... not "orrsssome" as your 15 year old sister might exclaim, but literally awesome. There was no mistaking it for Aunty Jenny's new Falcon. Maybe the confusion arises because some have not actually seen a HO in real life, let alone driven one. Anyone who'd seen them roaring around Bathurst would be in no doubt which is Ford's best car ever. Chalk and cheese. |

(1) Typhoon
(2) XR6 Turbo I still give the XR6 T 9 out of 10, for the price its a hoon of a car, plus theres NO Competition!

There a quite afew holden fans that admire the phoon.
I have been a holden man all my life. Its all I have ever driven. I was set to renew my lease this October with a VE HSV but have been swayed and going a phoon now ! Brings back memories of my VL calais with the inline 6 OHC turbo. Credit where credit is due. It's a great car ! From a Holden man about to join the dark side. :hihi: |

F6 is a nice falcon, has nothing on the Phase 3. Globally the best ford was the mustang followed by GT40 then the escorts, sierras, etc. The thing that lacks for the F6 is heritage, only proven really in magazines and local drag strips. It needs its time on the circuit to prove its worth like all the other real legends of the Ford stable.
