Default Removing ball joint

Hi Brains trust...

Does anyone know how to disconnect the b****y tight ball joints from the steering knuckle?

I have tried all the tricks. Hammering the knuckle. A ball joint separator. Even resorted to the ball joint wrecking wedge tool.

I cannot get the stupid thing to let go.....

Any hints??

PS - I have undone the nut 🤣

There's a couple of YouTube clips showing a hydraulic jack being used so maybe that's a last resort!

bigger hammer, I used a 4lb hammer to really thump it (wedge tool), and then hit the knuckle and it popped out. I should mention I'm not scared to wield a hammer but I know how to handle one too.


the other trick is to use heat on the knuckle side of the tapered hole and hit it. The heat on the knuckle will open the taper, hopefully helping in releasing the tierod end when hitting it some more blows.


lol you can see why i removed my lower control arm when doing my suspension all those years back. It's tight as all buggery.

So I ended up removing the wishbone and knuckle, drilling out the rivets, then using the ball joint separator and a rattle gun, loaded the ball joint right up, then smacked the knuckle again with a hammer.

Ball joint exploded out of the knuckle, never to be seen again ������

Next problem. Pressing out the bearing. My 6 tonne press isn't up to the job. Any suggestions what size press I need?

10t would do the job but might be best left to a workshop, so get the other side ready to go too, then pay once for the press.


Paying for a workshop to press some things is one job I'm happy to pay, especially if I'm not doing jobs that require a press often. Even if it sucks having to get into town to get it done.

I've just bought a 2017 MD Titanium auto diesel hatch with just over 55k's on the odo. I'm going to have my local mechanic do a full inspection on it but just wondering, are the ball joints and wheel bearings a problem on these vehicles?

No they should last their typical service life given it's been treated normally.

20 tonne press made short work of the bearings. Unfortunately, it didn't solve the suspicious noise from the front end. I have an awful suspicion it is in the gearbox somewhere. I need to get it up on a hoist, and try to pin down the noise
