Good value second hand cars - COVID times, Falcon/Commodore tax

Remember way back when, in the year 2019PP (pre pandemic) when the best value second hand cars used to be Falcons/Commodore? They were always the value for spondoolies equation if you were looking for a nice second hand car, they depreciated pretty quickly and you could always pick up a bargain, was a lot of car for the spondoolies.

Well, looks like those times have changed and anything Falcon/Commodore is basically drug money these days, except maybe the red headed step child Ecoboost Falcon.

Looks like some Honda's are good value these days if you want a large-ish car with something decent under the hood (or 'bonnet')

set carsales for large sedan min year 2011 and you get pages of commodores & Falcons.

They are still the value proposition for spondoolies

Theres still some good ones around for reasonable money thats for sure.
N/A variants dont seem to have 'suffered' the price increases though.

That only applies to Falcons, V8 Commodores are stupid money in any condition.

A friend of mine purchased an VY Berlina V8 in "average" condition in 2019 for $3,000 with rego.

Try & find one today for under $10,000.

This one is great value. $32k for a pov pack XT 3v, manual too! Only one for sale on the site. Plenty of fairmonts 3vs for 1/3rd of the price.

Damn, I actually meant the LS430 but for some reason typed 460.
They seem to be the unloved ones reflected in the price between the LS400 which are starting to dry up and become more appreciated, and the newer LS460.

My colleague's son was trying to sell a VE SV6 in early 2020, prior to leaving for an overseas study trip and backpacking holiday. He was asking $6K, which I thought was reasonable for the age and condition, and under all the $7-10K dreamers with worse condition cars. He couldn't get anyone to offer more than $4K, and even when he put 12 months rego on it, the best was $4500.

Of course we all know what hit just weeks later, and delayed his plans for over 2 years.

He sold it a couple of weeks back for $9K - to the young guy at the workshop who did the inlet manifold gaskets on it in Feb. It made me look at the cheap end of VEs, and even they seem to have all jumped again, so it's not just the V8s.

Turbo FGs on the other hand.....with what they're being sold for now, they're already well on the way to becoming the new iteration of the VL Turbo....

Yes Series 1 VE SS is probably best bang for buck in terms of v8's right now

Harder to find one that hasnt had ten shades of **** beaten out of it though..

As for the E55 , repairable write offs are the lepers' of the car world

Whilst i do agree with that.
Later model turbo falcons are slim pickings also which is another factor, a lot to do with they didnt sell well either.

How many normal cars are actually selling at stupid prices though?
I have been looking at Y62 Patrols for a while just waiting for the price to drop. I was looking at one yesterday that said it's Carsales ad was lasted edited in December 2021.
If your normal car that's not an unusual classic has been sale for 6+months maybe your asking too much.

I sold my 2019 Jimny for more than I bought it for without even listing it officially for sale. Mostly because I wasn't greedy.

Yes I saw people asking $50,000+ for a used Jimny, but those were for sale for months before and after I sold mine.

I had an E38 735iL Highline, the last of the E38s, got it for $2000 from a customer because it had a toasted alternator

Great car, just too bloody slow and no torque under 4000 RPM, had to use the throttle like a switch, on or off to get it to move with some enthusiasm, it also didn't like cutting circles it'd suck oil into the intake after the hard swing

Wouldn't mind another E38 but with an LS1 and 4L60E from a SS Commodore and normal suspension rather than self levelling crapola, would be perfect without all the bull**** European crap, and it'll be able to cut circles reliably

Love an E32 750iL but I think she's got 350,000km on the clock

Surely there can't be too much drama with the M70 V12, its single overhead cam without too much fancy junk, aside from the factory EMS having two of them cause potato spec 1980s electronics, if you **** that off for something like a Haltech maybe it might start every morning

I'd hate to see the stack of receipts required to make one of them get to 350k. So thats a good excuse to buy, all the big ticket items have probably been done
