And this is why Queensland insists on police officers manning mobile speed cameras, we all know what happens when someone tries to vandalise a police vehicle with an officer sitting inside.

Watched that report and the head cop was so surprised they were attacked. WTF. ??
People tend to get very angry when they are pinged for speeding 2ks over the speed limit by some nob hiding in a unmarked car behind bushes down a long hill.

Calls for the private company to be cut from doing this and only using police now.

Good, they're all over our local highway but the highway itself is in the worst condition I've seen it in the nearly 30 years I've lived here.

You want to revenue raise on our highway then some of the money comes back to us, otherwise take your speed camera car and **** off.

They like sitting at a place called Leneva, a long straight coming off a curvy mountain road where you can be stuck behind a slow driver for miles. (caravan from Beechworth) You finally drop down onto the flat valley at the first overtaking area and bang he's there with the camera.

Sort of almost like entrapment.

If the individual camera car operators really want to make a positive difference in society, they might consider a career in healthcare or education. When a government leans heavily on secrecy and deceit to stay on top of people, it’s a shame.

Yep, where I live our highway linking us to Melbourne goes for about 70km, there aren't that many safe overtaking places along the whole 70km stretch, there's a few sections where it goes into dual lanes for a bit (where I got caught by actual police ) then it's just goes to single lane unbroken lines with a decent view of incoming traffic for the maybe five or six safe overtaking spots on the whole 70km stretch of the highway.

They always put the camera cars in the safe overtaking spots with the unbroken line.

On my road trip I come across one in one of the very few safe overtaking spots when I started getting close to Genoa/Mallacoota.

I don't particularly feel sorry for the people operating these camera cars when they get attacked, you know you're partaking in revenue raising and it's a low act with where they put the cars.

News report I watched showed someone had placed boards with nails in them either side of their 4 wheels. They must have been sleeping or something not to notice someone moving around outside the vehicle.

I doubt anybody takes issue with policing dangerous speeding, but then the lions share of fines are for <10ph, or even <5kph over, how can they be surprised at the response? It does nothing for road safety.

Our (NSW) mobile camera cars now have the signs back. Makes them much easier to see if they're in a line of parked cars

Correct, but they dont have the signs leading up to the mobile speed cameras like they used to.
Any sign is better then no sign, however technically any speed camera fixed or not 'shouldnt' need a sign because people shouldnt be speeding.
I say that in a theoretical sense. Im no angel, far from it. Anyone who has ever held a drivers licence and claims to have never broken the speed limit is flat out telling a lie. Never being caught is beleivable. I copped my only speeding fine in 2018, it was only 1 point so eh, wasnt too upset about it.

These cameras have a place, in dangerous accident prone areas.

They're always typically in places to catch people unknowingly crawling over by a few kms, the intent is not to protect anyone, it's to fine people.

I'd be happy if this revenue went to a whole lot more booze buses / stops than I see out there, which is bugger all. Alcohol / drugs while behind the wheel is the biggest issue on the roads, not everyday commuters doing 65 in a 60.

They’re not always in safe areas with low limits in an attempt to catch lots of people breaking the speed limit by less than 10kmh. Only about 95% of the time.

Wonder if that HW patrol car still sits hidden on Cobblers rd facing the Hume at Jugiong ? Wouldn't even know he was there unless looking back in the mirrors.

That little bit of rough Hwy there is quite steep northbound.
That other little rest stop southbound closer back toward Bookham was their other little hiding spot.

"Victoria Police say the Nissan X-Trail was parked on the side of the Bellarine Highway just before 9pm when a person approached the vehicle, smashing the windows with a metal rod and slashing all four tyres.

It’s understood the operator, who was inside the car at the time, was able to drive away to safety without injury."

The driver should have been changed with driving an unroadworthy vehicle!

A few yrs ago now, to increase Police time, policing they took the operators out of the couple of camera traps they had in Tassie. Within a couple of weeks someone had set fire to a couple of 'em.

Seems a shame really, when you consider in a few short yrs your mobile/EV/Hybred will tell on you anyway.

Here in SA they're using unmarked white Volkswagen Caddy's, you can pick them a mile away.
I do 1500km a week for work and I've seen more in the past fortnight than I've seen in the past 10 months.
Conveniently, Tax returns will be rolling in around the same time fines will land in letterboxes.

why dont they use plain Caddy vans instead they all have the distinctive rear side window.
In a smallish town you gotta love social media.
Ironically, one FB ****er who always moans when the cars are in the area, ('you shouldnt report this, then the idiots who do speed will get pinged) guess who got pinged.

Ultimately, the use of 'reactive/punitive' measures such as hidden speed cameras & unmarked police cars, is indicative of poor policing/governmental policy. They (GovCo/Police) should be leaning forward in way of using 'proactive' measures, but hey, that won't bring in the coin now will it!

Having highly visible policing be it marked police vehicles, marked speed cameras, marked red light cameras - on all traffic light intersections, really would reduce road related speeding/traffic light infractions: just wish these money hungry idiots would do something positive for a change.

Agreed, I would like us to have police forces nationally that we could trust and respect - rather than outlier commands or individuals who meet this brief. As a long game it should reduce a lot of harmful statistics.

Bingo - need to go to a 'community policing' approach I think where they're a common sight around the local community rather than just appearing in various run-ins with the locals, with our local one man station the guy isn't seen around town unless he's in the police car and you're being pulled over.

Probably more important in a regional setting, something that really got the ****s up with the locals out here was our highway has a 2km section that has been rooted for about 12 months and they just put up 60 signs but for about a 5km stretch well past the area that's rooted, reducing the speed limit by 40km/h, it's usually a 100 zone.

Then they hide there with radar guns in that area, and if you get done for doing the 100 in this 60 area you end up on Facebook with a photo of the speed thing on the dash and you pulled over and they lecture everyone about safety while the local community pearl clutchers demand they get locked up and throw away the key

Then when you see the same police car who was hiding with the radar gun the week before doing 100 through the 60 zone - people start asking questions. If you're going to enforce the rules then at least appear like you're playing by them yourself.

If they cared so much about safety then they should help lobby VicRoads to pull their finger out and get it fixed. It doesn't take that much out of their day to send the odd email out or front up to a town meeting after hours and pretend to care.

A bit of rapport building goes a long way, basic relationship management principles, maybe some sales training at the academy

There's a reason the saying is 'Tell paramedics everything but tell police nothing' - needs to be more effort into trust and relationship building with the community and it starts with having a presence locally that isn't solely hiding on the side street of the main highway with a radar gun.

They might find people may be more receptive to helping and engaging rather than avoiding, some see themselves as sheepdogs but view everyone they come across as wolves.

  • speed camera housings be coloured yellow;
  • camera housings should not be obscured, eg, by trees, bushes or signs;
  • cameras be visible from 60m away in 40mph or less zones and 100m for all other speed limit zones;
  • signs should only be placed in areas where camera housings are sited or where mobile cameras operating;
  • mobile speed camera operators wear fluorescent clothing, and their vehicles should be marked with reflective strips;
  • camera sites be reviewed at least every six months to ensure cameras are properly visible and signposted.

Quote:
The DoT recommends that speed cameras be located in areas where many speeding accidents have occurred. Before cameras are installed, other measures to improve safety (eg, improving road layout, anti-skid surfacing, enhanced visibility) should first be considered.
nah, don't be stupid. these aren't the Aussie rules. They are the UK rules for speed camera placement

Whether the police do right or wrong there is going to be that fringe element of whiners who are going to sook up every time they get a fine for doing wrong.
Face facts you suppose to be driving by the speed limit or is that too hard for some soft *****.
Road safety starts with you being the driver who should be concentrating on your driving or is that too hard for some of you?

Now you can flame me much as you want.
