They've always been conservative with towing and heat.
The hybrid camry in Australia was the first hybrid Toyota certified for towing, but at just 350kg.
Diesel Rav4 was something like 750kg when it first came out too.
Prado was only 2.4t for a long time too.

This is true. Tundra sits miles behind F series, Silverado/Sierra and Ram in sales. US truck buyers are pretty patriotic, even though the Tundra is US built.

More news on the Tundra, wouldn't mind betting there is some tension between both engineering groups. Some discounting on the pre production test mules?

Quote:
Toyota has certainly set a high quality standard for us before we can bring it [the Tundra] to market,” said Toyota Motor Company Australia (TMCA) sales and marketing chief Sean Hanley.

Our partner Walkinshaw has been outstanding. We've very pleased and proud and can't wait.
Hanley stressed that the 300 Tundras to be produced in Victoria in 2023 will not be prototypes but fully-built production-spec vehicles that will be on-sold after the trial ends.
