I always put it down to the extra wheelbase they have, but it looks to be only around 400mm or less would that really make all the difference?

Surely it would be down to the ratio in the steering box? Number of turns, lock to lock would have nothing to do with the type of vehicle.

My guess slower ratio for 4wding and less chance of upsetting such a big vehicle with a quick ratio steering box.

However, I wouldn’t blame anyone in a 4wd wanting to avoid more difficult tracks that risk getting stuck or breaking something, especially if they need to drive that vehicle to work on Monday. A good friend plays by this rule, but still gets to where he would like to go.

Gasso should know this.... But yes I think their ratio has a lot to do with it too

Certainly for pre power steering but I would have thought technology with power steering would have overcome this by now, theses things don't have EPAS do they?

I think there's a lot of strawman arguments in this thread.

It gives me more confidence to off road my daily. I guess I would still be more careful if it was my only car. On the topic of steering rotation, utes are pretty bad with this although the Ranger is one of the better ones. You seem to only have to rotate it as much as a car. However it still doesn’t turn as shape due to the wheel base. This caught me out 20 minutes after I bought my Ranger. Came to the end of a cul-de-sac and causally went to turn around like I would in any other car. Half way around I realised I wasn’t going to make it. Would not have been too bad if it wasn’t out the front of some extremely busy train station in Sydney during the afternoon peak. Last edited by Ben73; 06-09-2022 at 06:37 PM. |

Wheelbase on a Ranger is about 30cm longer than a Fairlane/Falcon wagon.
The wider and taller wheels also make a difference to turning circle. Track between the two is similar. (new Ranger is a bit wider now)

Weren't you saying that a body on frame vehicle will never handle better than a unibody vehicle ?

With the Thailand Specials its still a lot more turning of the steering wheel for less turning of the wheels compared to cars and SUVs regardless of the decreased maximum steering angle.

Sorry, I can see in re-reading it I wasn't that clear, what I meant was unibody will almost always handle better and be quieter than ladder on frame...ladder on frame will almost always sit higher, weigh more, etc...It's hard to compare today as I can quickly only think of the new US only Maverick as a unibody ute but I'd be surprised if the Ranger outhandled it and yes Ranger is bigger, higher etc..

Surely a Maverick will outhandle Ranger? Why do you think that? |

Plus Maverick would undoubtedly be lighter with less robust suspension parts and running road tyres as opposed to ATRs, and I believe they have IRS
So 100% it will out handle a Ranger
