Fuel Consumption

Hi fellow members,
My MK4 2 TDCi wagon (240,000K It’s serviced regular)
The fuel consumption appears to be high, averaging 6 lit/100k suburb and freeway (speed limited) driving
4 months ago I was doing big miles towing a heavy trailer and averaging 6.5 lit/100k.
Has anyone tried injector cleaner and if so did it help?

If you'd asked if anyone had not tried injector cleaner and it didn't help then I'd say no I didn't try it, and no it didn't help.

Joking aside, anecdotal evidence on Google seems to suggest it works, but only if you use it regularly, ie every 10000 km.

I couldn't find any peer reviewed scientific evidence about the effectiveness.

6.0 l/100Km sounds OK to me. My two wagons get 6.0 to 6.4, always have done. They have both done over 240000Km, no additives.

I didn't think it would have been that much considering when I was towing it was 6.5.

agree, 6.0l/100km average is OK.

mine is more like 7.5-8 on my commute, which I guess is a pretty average drive (not too much stop/start).

MC tdci wagon, 150kkm. Has roof racks which probably don't help, and some decent hills on my regular drive.

When I had some DPF concerns I was monitoring the burns and found they were pretty regular @ 1 per 100km or so and always wondered if this made much impact on fuel consumption.

That's good fuel consumption.

Got between 7 to 8 l/100km on my Focus, 50/50 driving, with the same engine, obviously different body so maybe Mondeo is sleeker to get lower
I only tried that Liqui-Moly Diesel Purge when I had it but I have no data to back up if it was good or not.

I have a 2014 TDCi Kuga. TXMA engine, so early model.

Avging 6.9L/100, less when i hit the freeway.

I do have a flash tune in mine. Used to sit on 7.3-7.5L/100 before it.
You could look into a tune?

I've been told that injector cleaner in a diesel is a waste of money because of the high pressure in direct injection systems. Your fuel consumption looks good - mine sits at about 6.5 from mixed driving.

is yours a MB or MC?

I second this, I'd be thrilled to be getting 6.0L/100km. Long term average in my MC wagon has always sat a touch above 7L/100km according to the trip computer. Living in Canberra, so lots of breezing along 80-90kph parkways and never in bumper-to-bumper grind.

I haven't towed but I have done some highway trips with the car heavily loaded including a roof pod on top. If I was disappointed in the 'base' mileage I was getting, then I have to laud how little the performance and economy seemed to be affected by being loaded up. In fact I found it faintly ludicrous the first time I had the vehicle packed to the gunnels, and she still pulled strongly all the way up to highway speed, the diesel just doesn't even seem to notice or care.

The thing with towing (I've been told) is your trailer will usually get the benefit of slipstream behind your vehicle, so if the trailer is smaller than the outline of the tow vehicle then there's not necessarily much drag penalty. And the weight will get you when accelerating or going uphill, but assuming level terrain, there shouldn't be much extra consumption once you're up to speed. So depending on the specific use case, consumption might not be much higher than unladen.
