Hi Team,

What is the best code reader for an EL XR6, I have seen the a link (attached) for a particular model and was looking for opinions on the best type to purchase.

Depends on how you define "best". In lieu of $270 for the linked reader, I would rather make my own LED test lamp and count the flashes myself for about $5.

From memory the plug that you need to make your own led code reader is the same as the main power window wiring plug

Re making your own adapter to use with an older Ford OBD-1 scanner (like this: https://www.summitracing.com/search/...=INNOVA%203145 or https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/17494936...frcectupt=true ) see my post here: https://fordforums.com.au/showthread...ht=code+reader an http://www.fordforums.com.au/photos/...2&ppuser=24537 and http://www.fordforums.com.au/photos/...2&ppuser=24537 and http://www.fordforums.com.au/photos/...3&ppuser=24537 It's one of the BCM harness plugs (the lower one) that fits the OBD port. You also need a female OBD socket either taken from an earlier model such as an EA or bought online (one of these https://www.repairconnector.com/prod...r-Pigtail.html )

Of course when I made my adapter I already had a Innova 3145 and (bought for US$20.00 when the Australian dollar was at it peak) I had been using with my NB Fairlane (ex Ford Prototype based on the NA) on hand as well as plenty of BCN sockets, rotary switches, on/off switches, project boxes and the like floating around (as I still do) so my only outlay was on the BCM plug and the OBD1 socket. It probably cost me all of $20.00 out of pocket.

That adapter of yours really is a work of art aussieblue. A bit like a Jackson Pollock, but art nonetheless! I used to just connect the test lamp wires and jumper wire directly to the pins in the OBD socket. Of course that meant I had to keep a pin-out diagram handy to know which ones to use.

Perhaps but it works very effectively, is plug and play. and is much easier than counting flashes. I just still wish I knew what all the terminals on the port did as discussed here: http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=11316133 I never investigated the question further as all the cars that had that sort port have left this household.

Yes, that is interesting, especially Pin 17 Wire 53 BK-DB in EL Connector C-220 (Diagnostics) which seems to be unique to the EL V8 models. I have added a post to your 2010 thread.

I think the answer to the extra pins on the diagnostic connector is here https://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=11316133 Likely a remote start facility.
