Just a quick question
Has anyone here added and after market tacho to their AU, because i'm looking at doing it and not 100% sure what wire to use as the negative coil wire, so that the tacho would work. I reckon i could get it working, but it's easier to check with everyone with what they did before wasting time going no where? Any ideas? Cheers |

ahm negative coild wire is for dizzy driven cars ...
AU has coilpacks what you need is the rpm signal wire from the ecu, which is the pink wire

Yeah, I did this last weekend. There is a pink wire from the ECU called "Clean Tacho Output"...problem is, there are lots of pink wires from the ECU :P
Is yours an i6 or v8? Edit: The clean tacho output is pin 45 on the v8 EEC, not sure about the i6.

I6:
Pin # 45 (pink with a silver run) Tachometer Signal (TS) ranges from 0 to 12V Square wave when engine is srunning FYI: The Speedometer Transducer is located in the instrument panel. It receives the signal from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) . It converts the signal and sends it to the PCM (Pin #58) and other modules. EEC: The ECUs are very similar between the I6 and V8 when it comes down to pin location

Doesn't every AU model come with a Tacho standard? If you really need something to screw/bolt to your A-pillar, invest in a set of splits, and put the tweeters there. At least they would be functional and useful.

Thanks for all your guys help, it turns out i was wrong with what wire i thought was right.
Regarding JC, comment, yes mine does have a tacho, and i've already put splits in the a pillars, but what i'm doing, is getting a digital tacho, just a 4 digit display, and will mount that on top of the dash hub. No shift light at the moment, just something different to things out there already. Cheers |

Also remember the rule of thumb, keep the tacho diameter below that of the steering wheel to keep the :ymca: factor at acceptable levels.

Superroo,
Jaycar have a great digital tacho kit you should be able to put together in a few hours. I built one for my old XW. I mounted the tacho in the spot where the radio was supposed to be. Looked most excellent... |

Even though its a slightly dated thread just thought I would let you guys know that all Au's have a digital tacho built into the cluster from factory. You have to open the dignostics mode to see it though. Have a look in the Tech files on fordmods.com

Sylox, good idea in theory, but when the dash is in diagnostic mode, you can't get an odometer reading or DTE, without having to revert back to normal mode, so it makes it a pain in the rear to swap between the two.
