Rant the other day - I'm coming up on 15 years of rants on AFF

The irony about this is you can't touch your phone because 'distractions' but the amount of distracting crap I could use while driving in a modern car - thats perfectly fine.

Anyone here with a car with Android Auto/Apple Car Play - can you use social media apps and read emails while in motion?

They seem to have that covered.

"As for mounted, wearable and in-built devices, fully licensed drivers must not scroll on them, display text messages or social media, emails or photos. "

I have a sneaking suspicion this is what AEB is actually for.

How would you even tell - you get pulled over and you could be like yeah I was using the GPS (not picking fights with Greens voters on Twitter).

LAne keeping assist, AEB, radar cruise control - they basically drive themselves now who cares if you're watching MAFS while driving.

It'll just bounce itself between the lane, slow down if the car in front does and stop if everyone else does as well

You could drive a bus through the gaps in this new rule. So many grey areas. But then again, Victoria Police/Victorian government love grey areas, cause it helps revenue raising.

How are police going to tell the difference between someone pressing an in dash screen to adjust the temp vs touching it to change a song or whatever?

What will happen is people will be handed out fines left right and centre through their lack of discretion - passing the buck onto the Magistrates Court as the 'appeals process'.

Which is exactly what happened with the COVID fines they handed out that Victoria Police ended up renegging on thousands of them and the others ended up clogging up the Magistrates Court so badly it added massive delays to anyone waiting on hearings.

Took me five months to get in front of my tiny regional court for my speeding charge because all the COVID fines being contested, then there was 53 of us going through on the same day

Guilty until proven innocent. They love it, cause they know most people either can't afford to fight it, can't be bothered, or it works out cheaper to just pay the fine. Grubby.

This is talking about unmounted devices? Like it sitting on your lap or on the seat next to you? Bloody great rule. Now enforce it!

Can't believe how common it is for people to be fiddling with their unmounted phones / tablets, not just at the lights, but whilst driving. FFS! Mounted device at least has you looking up and forward, which would be more like adjusting the radio or infotainment.

Oh missed that. Phones these days can read out messages, and you can reply with txt using voice commands.

But what about odb2 displays? Hmmm

There are laws that have been around since Adam was a boy, that cover just about everything.

Driving with undue care

Driving without proper control of the vehicle

I'm sure there's a few others that are vague enough to cover off a whole range of activities. These were sufficient for many years because common sense was abundant. Nowadays, unless it's spelled out exactly to the minutest detail the general populace thinks it doesn't apply to them.

Dashcam owners Australia on YT highlights the lack of ability out there, and not just those being filmed but often the ones doing the filming are just as bad, unable to see past their windscreen.

How long will it be until you can send in dash cam footage of someone, and getting them fined if doing something illegal on the road?

Yeah, the famous dash cam court. As you say, some of the camera drivers are just as bad. I reckon, sometimes, they are worse than those they film.
