Battery prices

Boy looks like i am going to be up for an new Battery in my car !

Car will now be 7 years old in Jun and now i am on the look out for a new Battery and looks like i will be stung $214 for it. It's a 55D23L.

Last time i got a new Battery was It was $120 for a VY Commodore SS, that was 7 years old, when it gave up the ghost.

Looks like when i bought new cars Battery's last well and i thought how come i never get more that 3 to 4 years out of a new replacement Battery ?

I see NS40Z type Battery's from $159, so i ask why is mine so much more.

Have you got in the fam a late model with stop start ?
One thing for sure switch off when having one as I do in mine.
Wife’s 18 CX5 low k’s battery gave up the other week, with discount $380 !
Batteries are just crap nowadays especially due to all the tech in modern cars.
Be happy better than what I had to pay last week.

The NS40Z is only 360CCA, the 55D23L is also small at 480CCA.

What's it for, a Kia?

55D23 is the Jap/Korean version of the Falcon/Commodore (up to VZ) battery, its a bit taller casing otherwise its virtually identical.

I think the reason batteries used to last ages is cars had **** all electronics in them, now they've got all this **** which is on even when the car is off and they flog out batteries left/right/centre, plus Jap/Korean/Australian cars have **** all battery in them compared to what Euros spec up.

If you think $214 is expensive, wait until you do a stop/start car because you'll be lucky to get change out of $500 for the stop/start job from Century for the Mazda 3.

Price up a Century 55D23L and then price up a Century 58 and see if there's a price difference because there's only a 20mm difference in height, one is the Korean/Jap job and the other is the Commodore job.

Then buy the Supercharge Gold equivalent.

With autobarn and Repco prices doing the anti-coles "up-up-up"
I ended up with OEM ford/motocraft - try them, you might be surprised at how cheap they are compared to the after market mobs.

From memory I paid $140 late last year (Falcon)

Prior (and another car) I went the supercharge gold.

Last week while our Everest was in for a service the dealer kindly advised me that the battery was on its last legs after 5 years from new. He was happy to change it for me for close to $600 (noting it wasn’t a stop start battery) I said thanks but no thanks. Took the car to my battery guy and had it replaced with the charge system reset for $220 ( a bit lower than the dealers price )

Yes our Mazda dealer quoted like $550/600 whilst in service the week before, I kind of looked at him, said Thanks but NO Thanks.
Hence the $380 price I mentioned - through NRMA member discount even better FITTED win win !
Didn't I already mention my first post about the tech + stop start eats batteries for breakfast lol......

Last monday i had the nrma out for a dead battery. Plan was get a jump to get home then next morning get a lift down to supercobarnsons and get a battery. The nrma guy had a 550ca in his van. $220 was the cost, 5 minutes to fit and old battery taken away for disposal. So yes i could have spent the time to go out and get a battery a bit cheaper, but that would take time and then id be left with having to work out how to dispose of the old battery. So $220 i dont think was a rip off for the convenience.

All those maintenance free batteries (Century or otherwise) are crap now.

Personally I specify non maintenance free ones, they are great.
Use the Century distributor in Albury to order them through an auto electrician and usually still cheaper than through car parts stores.

I was looking at AC Delco may be the go and i may give Ford a ring, even Mitsub or toyota etc.

Thinking Century but ? i do not see the point going any flasher type battery then what is original in it as it's a old type and i have never added water to it at all.

My brother has a stop start car and i remember he was too be stung something like $750 out in the sticks.
No point having the stop start, when you are not in the big city.

Exide batteries are well priced. Atleast around here they are.

I had the dealer replace the stop-start battery in the Jag two years ago. Total cost of the battery, and labor to fit the new battery, was $685.00

I was sent the Jaguar guidelines for battery charging and replacement. Replacing the battery in a lot of modern cars is more than swapping old for new. For that reason, I paid the dealer to do it.

DFB the wife’s CX5 2018 was no huge challenge watching over the change over by the NRMA guy.
In fact I did ask is there anything to look out for or consider once done - the only thing he said in a day or so the stop start flashing symbol at the dash will go back to normal nothing else to do.
I learnt from him the reason why the stop start symbol was flashing for weeks prior - it is the warning that the battery is getting low needs replacing.
Obviously it may vary how much tech is in one car to another - therefore I expect not every car is the same but I could be wrong.

It saved me near $300 what the dealer quoted.

Usually with modern cars they have a counter with the age of the battery that the ECU is monitoring that has something to do with the smart charging systems where it takes into account degradation of the battery as it ages.

So you're supposed to hook up the scanner and initiate the battery replacement procedure to reset the counter, which I'm assuming the dealership should be doing.

Whether or not local workshops and these RACV/NRMA mobile types do this is another question.

It's also an excuse for the usual $150 'diagnostic charge' that's become a thing these days, maybe other industries should implement this, go to a pub, order a steak and there's a +$50 charge for the chef using the cast iron griddle to cook it for you that's on top of the costed-in labour charges in the price of the steak.
