I had a similar experience to this situation a few years ago.

About a dozen potential Tour De France bicyclists were lined up at a set of lights, 2 abreast, and about 3 metres over the white stop line. I was in the RH lane next to the 4th row of their grid.

Yeah, baby, I can smoke this mob with 230 killerwasps of V8 carbon monoxide, no problems, holeshot here I come. They have no hope against mechanical powa.

Lights turn green and the rider nearest to me puts in a big effort, but I am a bit slow as I like to check for redlight runners before entering the intersection.
Just as I start to move, his high powered bicycle has a catastrophic failure, and he goes A over Z onto the road in front of my barely mobile car.

What could have possibly gone wrong if my ego had got the better of me ?
