Default Ford Focus Diesel 07 to 10 models

Chaps. What can you tell me about the Ford Focus Diesel TDCi 2.0L? Say 2007 to 2010 models.

Are the mechanicals reliable? How long can you stretch the engines out for reliably? e.g. should one avoid 200k+ engines?

Any common problems to consider?

Any major service required and when are they due? e.g. belts and/or chains.

Belts chains tensioner water pump due at 20000

Is it a manual or auto?

Manual better in fact did they come out with an auto?

Just the usual stuff
Shocks
Brakes
Front air dam fell off mine
Drivers seat gets tired

But they are rugged and reliable

I got out of mine at 278000 on suspicion that it couldn’t last forever but it prob has

Same engine as peugeot307/308 of same era

Great car just suspicious of some of the later models having a powershift auto


Also you ll need to get things decarbonised couple of times


My mechanic back then sent it to a radiator place


Solid constant 5.2 fuel eco maybe 5.4 air con on constantly

Mine was an LV and heavily modified - I flogged the absolute *** off it, I got videos of it with the hand brake up and ripping front wheel drive single peggers, it also went down the drag strip 6x.

I also hit a wallaby in it, which smashed the ECU out of its home, which it then got jammed between the front left wheel and the road, hanging by its wiring loom, and I drove it like that another 15km home and it still survived.

Mine went 235,000km from new when I got rid of it, gave it to a friend, its still alive - he hit a roo in it recently, bashed in the front quarter but its still kicking.

Does 5.7L/100km all day every day, no matter how hard or how soft you drive it.

It went up to 6.1L/100km but with a lot of 150-180km/h

Injectors are around $1000+ GST each, mine had a leaky injector on cylinder 3, but otherwise pretty solid car - stick with the manual and stick with the model prior to the LV as I don't think it has the torque limiter on the first three gears like the LV does.

My search criteria is stuck on "manuals" only.

Whats involved with decarbonisation? Cost?

I'm potentially looking for a cheap run around that I can bash around for 2-3 months whilst I look for a longer term vehicle. It'll be daily driven so need all the things that make it "go" to be reliable. A bit of knocking and banging from old age is acceptable...after all...been in a 04 banged up falcon for over 8 years now :P Used to it.

I'd be more inclined to get your hands on a Mondeo XR5 or Focus XR5, but look for one with its original owner rather than P platers as the Focus XR5 has become a bit of a P plate weapon of the 2020s.

You get all the diesel torque but with another 50kw worth of power, and a mint sounding 5 cylinder engine that sounds deep, like V8s.

There are 13 on carsales at the moment. Mostly LV, but a couple of LT. What is this torque limiter thing? Does it apply to manuals?

If I do decide to go down this path, first thing I'd do is to get a tune.....

Nein. Only looking for a 2-3 month car to run around. Its not long term. Something that can be a bit of fun but I can leave it on 3rd party.

Its still just all hypothetical at this stage.

Toque limiter applies to both auto and manual, it won't let you have the full 320nm of torque in 1st through 3rd gear, you can only have it in 4th-6th on the LV.

No one locally can tune them, I had mine tuned and a larger hybrid turbo, they had serious issues trying to play with the fuel side of it,

If you try increase fuel, it reduces injector duration,

You try increase injector duration, it reduces fuel.

It protects itself from being fiddled with, and no one can figure out the French electronics.

They did some dodgy shit to get more fuel out of it, ended up making 123KW/front wheels up from 85KW

Its only got a 2.5 BAR MAP sensor too, so you can't go above like 24 PSI boost, before the sensor goes out of range and the car goes into limp mode.

The XR5 is tuneable

I think the decarbonisation cost can’t remember but it wasn’t frightening guessing 300 back than 2015

I used to be able to wheel spin it at lights take off with five on board

Tune?

It goes well enough.

Hills- there isn’t any just accelerates up em on torque all the way

XR5 makes 60KW more power, comes on peak torque 250 RPM earlier and holds it about 1500 RPM later than the diesel - the same amount of torque as well, 320nm.

The diesel is trash compared to the XR5, costs more to service and maintain too because diesel.

Spend the extra, get the XR5 then sell it afterwards, you have a market of P platers who are keen on it.

But both of got over diesel - gor different reasons

Those Peugeot diesels are remarkable for long life

Wife’s friend hubby has an Mondeo powershift diesel

Bought it to replace his last after many Falcons

Second hand

Runs Gc/ Bris return commute 180 km a day

Done 240000

His view best car he s ever owned


The motor the same two litre Peugeot ford shared two litre diesel

Actually you might be on to something there. Didn't think about the Mondeo XR5, was only thinking the Focus XR5 which is a little too dressed up for me. A quick look at carsales just now, its just at the price where I wouldn't be comfortable to chuck it on 3rd party. The ones closer to my price range are 300,000km+, which is getting up there for a little turbo engine. I really don't want throw too much coin at it cos it'll just be for a few months (potentially) whilst I look for a longer term car....think Lexus GS460 or a might just go all in on a ISF...though the ISF is a bit "look at me". :P

The Mondeo first caught my eye when I had one tailgating me in the 3v. I was in 3rd gear and tried to pull away....to legal limit. It was keeping up pretty well. I let it pass to see what it was, and saw it was a Mondeo TDCi. Googled what the hell that was, and went a little red seeing it was a bloody diesel
