Default VINs

Hi guys
Been a while, but need some help
I just purchased an XF Panel Van . YAY
Yes.. unseen from the internet.. OMG !!
Communication with the seller has be good and helpful
But... (here we go) ..
He took a photo of the Compliance Plate so I could see the VIN
He read the VIN to me as well..and texted it to me
No big deal..
But.. doing a search.. it comes up as invalid
I have read it from the photo and are going to get him to check it again
The VIN is:
JG42GJ21580.. that's all I have, but thinking it should have 6FPAAA in front ?
Can anyone help me with this as the plate clearly has this number stamped on it..
The van is 05/1986 XF
Thanks in advance
Mark

To my knowledge the 17-digit ISOVIN beginning with 6FPAAA wasn't introduced until around 1989, so a 1986 XF should just have the older style 11-digit VIN beginning with JG.

I just tried again and the message reads as:

No vehicles found. NEVDIS has responded with no vehicle information for this serial number. This is possibly due to an error in the serial number you entered

But the Serial No. is correct that I can read (11 numbers)

Minei s a 93 XF panel van and has the 6FPAAA in front of the 11 digits and also has 6 letters proceeding the 5 numbers. I note your as JG42 is that right.

As noted by Dr Terry and referring to this page https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/ve...orts/vins.aspx
Vin numbers did not start being used until 1st of January 1989. All numbers used on cars were not called vin. They were serial numbers. The reason your number doesn’t come up would more than likely not be in their database, as anthing that old would be too difficult for them to add.

J = Australia
G = Broadmeadows
42 = Falcon Van. (JH/JG build).
http://www.fomoco.com.au/ID.html
G = 1986
J = may
21580 = ford only knows what this is
and if theres another letter after them 5 numbers it usually depicts engine size

Thanks everyone

Yes RoKWiz, JG42GJ21580 is correct.. a "C" follows this

I understand now when the VINs were introduced
But how do you check if the vehicle is free of all titles ?
(not stolen or money owed) ?
I know its closing the gate after the horse has bolted..but

I have all 3 photos of the plates (including the GAS plate)
Will try to decipher the original build

Thanks for your input and help

Thank you Wodahs for that
Paid the $2 fee.. and received a certificate

Although no information about the vehicle was available, no security
was held nor interest was registered

Hopefully that will be sufficient to have it transferred and registered into
my name when its road worthy

Thanks everyone

Good result, post some pictures when you can. Replacing the barn door seals is a big plus if you don't want to poison yourself with exhaust fumes.

Or just tuck the tailpipe out the drivers rear quarter, like many older vans did anyway.

It's a typo, the L should be a G or a H, to show either assembled in Broadmeadows or Brisbane. I'd be betting on it being a G

There were two assembly plants at Broadmeadows. Plant 1 was the main Falcon plant and where all the JG vehicles 1960-2016 were built. Plant 2 was used to build - at various times and from memory only - Falcon seats, Louisville trucks, Telstar, Capri, and for a while in the late 80’s and/or early 90s, Falcon Commercials. I am not 100% certain, but I suspect that vehicles produced in Plant 2 may have had that L rather than G identifier, and you have one of those vehicles produced in Plant 2.

aint no typo the chassis is stamped the same JL40 ,just found out its the 2nd production line at broadmeadows ,JG was the main production line.also spotted a few other JL40 prefixes mainly in late xf utes.

Just found this explanation of Capri codes that shows an L code for Broadmeadows, which would back up my suggestion.

http://members.pcug.org.au/~jcarroll...nge%20assembly.

My memory was wrong on the Telstar. Pictures on the web seem to show it being produced alongside Falcon (plant 1).

Hi. A Nissan Ute would be a better buy, they had a longer warranty.
