Would be interesting to actually know whether that reduction is because the new car market in total has reduced or whether it is more or less in the case of EV's - in isolation, the information is really not much use as it stands.

I feel that the uptake model for EV's will be very different to other new technologies, and therefore harder to predict.

The other "feeling" I get, is that people wanted EVs are much less attached to brand loyalty. So China is likely to make faster inroads in that segment.

Seeing a few BYD Seals on Melbourne roads every morning, China is making inroads quickly.

That's probably a more accurate assessment. A lot of these articles are cherry picking "stats" to support a narrative that brings the clicks.

The car industry world wide is seeing sales dropping, not just EVs.

EV sales are not as clear cut as some would think.
OEMs selling EVs have priced them too high and turned a lot of buyers away (to recoup the R&D costs). Price reductions for some models reflect this.
Just look at how many BYD cars are out there. They're cheaper, decent enough and have a variety of vehicles, not just shitty SUVs.

In addition, there are people out there wanting to get into an EV but due to restricted access to home charging makes it a difficult proposition. Governments put in the policy and then just washed their hands of it, leaving manufacturers to deal with the mess.

This is why hybrids, in particular PHEVs are gaining popularity.

Well said, particularly for highlighting the lack of real access to home charging for many. There are quite a lot of flats in my area with a surfeit of cars spreading 400-500m from the high rise fringe. These owners have no practical, dependable access to home charging for a dedicated EV.

Re: total worldwide market sales, here is global car sales 1990-2023 (requires sub but you get a quick glimpse when loading - 2023 was up)

https://www.statista.com/statistics/...es-since-1990/

here's ING's global car market outlook for 2024: their forecast is for a bigger 2024 than 2023, but sales growth rate slowing

https://think.ing.com/articles/globa...-outlook-0824/

"Vehicle inventory levels have increased in the important US market and due to a stalling of electric vehicle (EV) uptake in the Western world this year."

as far as themes go, subheadings are:

"Major regional markets maintained growth in the first half of 2024
Sales growth set to slow
Production volumes to trail the auto sales dynamic
Auto sector peers feeling the heat
Electrification slows in Western world while China pushes forward
Lower battery prices could support EV uptake into 2025
Hybrid cars are enjoying a comeback"

I rode in a very new (Uber) BYD recently. It smelled like a toxic waste dump, and sounded like a sewing machine. Actually noisier inside than our Equinox Diesel. (Which is just a testament to the insulation on the Nox, as outside that engine sounds like a broken chainsaw.)

But yes. Those that think they're saving the planet by running their electric car on Brown Coal, are more likely to be sucked in by cheap crap from China.

Did some car shopping with the Mrs yesterday and all three dealerships we visited were willing to drop their pants for a sale without us even asking. We're talking 20% discounts on brand new euro cars with 5yrs servicing thrown in for good measure.

Getting pretty tough out there..

Thye screwed consumers over for years through covid.
Constant price increases and no discounts.
Now its our (consumers) turn.
Its a market -was the sellers time-now its the buyers time.

Could you share which vehicles/brands ...I'm upping my research as the wife insists we watch Outlander....and I've managed to get away using an iPad while also watching as she drools over some bloke called Jamie and I seem fully engaged...(with the plot descriptions hidden on another tab).

The sides of many of them are very busy, like Chris Bangle's flame surfacing had someone go beserk with it. I understand why, to break up a very tall slab side on many of the SUVs. VW keep styling clean in the mid price range, Suby not too bad either (lots of black plastic)

Thought you were talking about the Mitsubishi Outlander for a second ! You know the deal.. happy wife, happy life so sometimes we just need to pay dumb

We looked at the Audi S4 Wagon, Audi A6, Merc C43 R Edition, BMW X3 3.0i & 330i Sedan. All of the above could be had for decent discounts. Really tempted to buy another XC60 phev though..

Yer worse is the mitsu’s front ends.
Diabolical mess - huge bursting pimples on either front sides with those lights or whatever you call them., a growth.
Mate even subbies - tame compared to mitsu’s - edgy quirky and all I still see leather elbow cardi stigma stuck to them but for Rex/R and Sti’s.
Wagons are typical the uni lecturer or retiree buyer lol sorry

I mean the cardigan worked for Kurt when he laid down those era-defining tracks in the MTV Unplugged session all those years ago... Didn't work for him for much longer than that, though...

That kind of stuff is radiating out from Byron like after a nuclear detonation, what was old is new again. Column shifts and bench seat wagons next, please.

Well actually, they dont NEED home charging to own an EV
Average trip per day is 33klm and average range is 400klm. One charge at a supercharger per week (20 mins) and your done.
The whole reality vs perception is way out of whack with EVs

Lets be honest here. Toyota is not an EV maker. They are an EV blocker
They only released the half baked BZ#ERGWSn to satisfy global emissions standards and have no intention of selling it in volume or manufacturing any EV in volume. The announcement they are reducing targets literally 60 days after releasing their first EV says it all.
They bet the farm on hydrogen. Now they are happy selling into volume markets that still accept old tech and are hoping against hope that the whole EV fad will go away.
Their Kodak moment awaits......
