Chief Executive Mitsu Australia, Robert McEniry, said today " Investigating a four cylinder engine option for the 380 and said that talks with Malaysian car maker Proton about export opportunities were progressing"
Proton engines are ex mitsubishi, built by Proton. Why not import from Japan ??? |

Proton was not to use their engines, they are considering to export the 380 to Thailand to replace a current proton model based off the old US Galant.
4 Cylinder 380? I cant see how itll fit without cutting into lancer sales with the new prices. Seeing as the current base is $27990, the 4 cylinder model will have to come in at circa $24-25k... |

true, the lancer starts at 19990, but the range goes to the $30000 VRX (excluding EVO)...
If the v6 380's starting price is $27990, the 4 cylinder (240?) would have to come in at $24-25000, probably cutting into potential lancer sales. Good for 380, bad for Lancer. Had the v6 380 started at circa $30-32000, the 4 cylinder could be around $27000. The pricing seems better balanced that way to me... |

$26 K is probably a better price, people will pay big dough for 4cyl and that will keep it far enough away from Lancer.
Hell its cheaper than the Mazda 6, hell even the 6cyl 380 is the same price as a 4cyl camry.

Mitsubishi are going under slowly, this is just another attempt to save a lost casue which the 380 is.

Things mitsubishi can do:
-Add 2.4 4 cylinder to line up (6 speed manual or 5 speed auto?) -Stabilise prices -Add equipment (which are pretty pov really) -improve colours and a few key plastics inside -sexy looking alloys all models -Stability control Jap cars are ment to have technology. Where are the Xenons, LED's, cameras etc. Atleast as highly profitable options? |

surely they'd have to put forced induction on a 4cyl so it could move the 380 with some form of efficiency? 380's too big for a 4cyl. They never did learn from the Magna or from Holden with their 4cyl Commodores. Ford were smart ;) No 4cyl Falcons

In this weeks GoAuto Mitsubishi have only said they will look at it, but it would be at least 2 years away, so its a bit late for that.
With the 380 weighing close to the Falcon at around 1600-1700kgs a 4 cylinder wouldn't save much at the pump because it would be working so hard to shift all the weight. |

380 weighs what 1600kg now?!
Then again if the 4 cylinder goes to other asian markets it could be a worthy addition after all Korea gets a 2.8L V6 powered statesman.. I would imagine they have a DI 4 cylinder. Might be worthy from a economy point of view. No other regular family sedan has a DI gasoline engine. If they could slot a Diesel in their they could shift a few more units. |

People need to get it into their heads that Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) is an AUSTRALIAN company, with a Japanese parent company, just like Ford Australia is an Australian company with an American parent company.

Yes, but I was refering to its parent. We expect american parent companies to have huge engines with a optional V8 and RWD.
We expect the jap owned ones (mit and toyas) to offer hmmm I dunno. Technology was their big draw card with multivalve heads, first 5 speed, awd etc. |

The 380 v6 figures are pretty poor as is. They would really be best ditching the 380.
How many 4/6 lineups do they want? Lancer, Magna, Verda (really a magna), 380, Colt, etc etc... There's no consistancy there for a range linup.... Ditch the 380, redevelop the magna with both 4cyl and 6 cyl, keep the Lancer a 4 cyl, keep the Colt as a hatchback model and it should be fine. If the magna sales aren't doing good, why would the 380 do any better? They could have just replaced the magna with a 380? bah. Nincum poops!

Comparatively, 380 starts at $27990 for the 3.8L 6spd manual es. A 4 cylinder option would have to undercut that price by a decent margin.. say $25000. The difference between the Lancer and 380 in quality (interior and exterior), safety, style (yes style.. in my opinion current lancer looks trashy) for $5000 is worth the jump. |

Rumor had it that they also did a a fews days/brief run of more Magna wagons for NZ, but that's neither here nor there - I dont know if their factory tooling would be able to accomodate for a setup of an old platform after the 380 started rolling out. |
