HI I have a 97 Explorer and have just been told by my mechanic that I am up for a new motor due to the Plastic timing chain tensioner disintergrating I have done some research and have found that in USA this componant was subject to a recall I have spoken to Ford Australia who have stated that although it is the same engine that was imported to australia their techincians gave it the all clear. I have contacted Consumer Affairs who have advised me to get as many owners of the 97/98 Explorers to email me with your thoughts and concers on this problem so I can forward them to Ford Australia if no satisfaction or recalls are issued I will then take the information to the ACCC who if we have enough owners with this problem or who may encounter this in the future will act on our behalf.Please forward this to any other owner who may be affected.Please redirect their responses to me at teenymak@bigpond.net.au.

Bugger !!! My cousin has a problem with his F250 fuel filter and Ford won't honor the warranty. Also a Ford plastic part. !!

A mate had the same prob, he ended up gettin a later engine from eagle, the guys at ford just laughed and call them the "exploder", its been known about by them for quite a while.

Yep - Its a bit of a known issue with some early Exploders with the v6 engine.
I handled one when I was a fleet controller. Had 180k on it - warranty or FoMoCo help was never an option. |

you should be so lucky I bought an 96 explorer xlt (first and last time through wholesale )Ford dealer ran ok got home few days later tranny goes haywire wont shift correctly hangs in gear etc took to local ato tranny place hooked up reader went for a drive spent an hour (no charge) said you better take to ford as were getting some strange codes but the tranny according to his reader was working took to fords told the speed sensor on transfer case defective $45 ordered part told wont fit transfer case from different model$45 given details of who might be able to help (heres a good bit and the reason I will not use ford again) told by service guy that this is what happens when you buy a used car you dont know whos had it or where its been (jarvis thrives on used cars)
rang these guys up only to be told they wont touch it (they knew the car) apparently a dealer dropped it of and told them to get speedo working (ford dealer at nourlunga) reckong it will cost two grand to fix as need new transfer (right model) and wiring harness so ive got a car with no over drive and the speedo does what it wants maybe I should go to consumer affairs |

.. they should have sold 5.0L Exploders in Australia .. surely they couldn't have as many problems as the V6 models?

I was lucky, mine was bought from the dealer with the problem. They had to cover the warrenty work. Just as well, total bill was into the thousands....

(not sure how it worked as I was in parts on service) I would have to guess that your Explod-er did not get service at a dealer??? Everyone complains about the cost of a service... still cheaper than a complete rebuild! :togo: D  :
